This Saturday afternoon US time, Canelo Alvarez faces off with Chrisitan Mbilli. The matchmaking is very good as far as the chances it proves to be entertaining. The bad part is the location. Even though this main event will likely go as planned, the risk doesn’t appear to be worth it. This event will be live streaming on DAZN PPV and part of the Ultimate subscription package on DAZN app.
For some time now the war in Iran has resulted in attacks in Saudi Arabia. The money invested by the Saudis into boxing meant we would no doubt see certain events being held there. That said given the success of a live gate and overall viewership it could gain in America, paired with the high enough risk of an attack happening; this should be taking place in the United States. Even if it goes without any trouble, the long-term plans for Riyadh 2030 should be the most important thing.
Many other events have been postponed and from a corporate standpoint you would think it would be a no brainer. Maybe Saturday, and the WWE event will be used to prove other shows can be rescheduled and ease the fears of future bookings. Anyway, let’s get back in the ring for what appears to be a good old fashion TV fight. How much of a chance does Mbilli have at pulling the upset? A pretty good one if you pay any attention to the odds.
As the saying goes father time is undefeated and of course that is true. Although Canelo is no longer at his peak, this boxing podcaster doesn’t believe he’s completely washed like some in the boxing community. I’ve heard and seen a few boxing media members equate the aggressive style that Chrisitan Mbilli brings will make the fight look like the first two Gennady Golovkin fights. GGG is far more calculated and overall skilled as a come-forward fighter than Mbilli.
The poor showing against Terence Crawford had to do more with style and just how elite of a boxer Bud is rather than Canelo being way over the hill. Mbilli will allow Canelo to counter punch and do other things he’s good at. Alvarez won’t have to cut off the ring or be wary of the vast skills of a guy like Crawford. That’s not to downgrade Mbilli in any way, in fact this will be a spirited battle. Skills pay the bills and Canelo will out skill and outsmart Mbilli.
Best bet is Canelo by decision –150.
My Official Prediction is Canelo Alvarez by decision.
