Does Montana allow sports betting? – A legal history
So is sports betting legal in Montana? Yes, but as we’ve already mentioned, Montana took something of a unique approach to sports betting legislation. In-person sports bets can be done in kiosks and at retail sites, of which there are many throughout the state. What about online sports betting in Montana? That’s where things start to get a little bit more complex.
Technically speaking, mobile sports wagering is legal in Montana, however unlike with other states, such as
sports betting New Jersey, you can’t bet from anywhere in the state – or even your own home. Even to place an online wager, you have to be on the site of a retail sports betting property. These do include kiosks though, and there are many located throughout the state in 2025.
What changes are we likely to see in 2025?
The only change that we are likely to see with regards to Montana Lottery sports betting in 2025 is an increased number of locations. When sports betting was legalized, the target was to have over 2,000 retail betting kiosks and locations throughout the state, so we can expect to see more open up throughout this year.
As for more apps being made available, or off-site betting, there doesn’t seem to yet be any plans yet. This is in part due to the fact that sports betting in Montana got off to a pretty slow start.
