Big changes are taking place in the Ohio gambling world, thanks to the passing of HB 29 in December 2021. Governor Mike DeWine signed off the Ohio gambling bill, which finally permitted sports betting to become a legal activity throughout the Buckeye State.
From 1st January 2023, retail and online sports betting goes live in the state, and naturally there’s a lot of excitement among sporting fans. Not only will you be able to visit retail sportsbooks in land-based casinos, but you’ll also be able to place sporting bets in kiosks placed in stores throughout the state.
That’s all well and good, but the really exciting news is that sports betting in Ohio will also be available online. That makes for a much more pleasant and convenient wagering experience, as you won’t have to drive anywhere or spend anything in travel costs. Just sign into your online sportsbook account on your PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone, and all your Ohio sports betting opportunities will be ready and waiting for you – at any time of the day or night!
It was New Jersey that paved the way for the relaxation of online sports betting laws across the US. In 2018 the federal courts agreed with NJ that PASPA was unconstitutional, limiting the rights of states to set their own sports betting regulations.
Neighboring states, including Pennsylvania and West Virginia were quick to make changes in their own state legislature to legalize online sportsbooks, leading to rapid economic growth. And naturally enough, Ohio lawmakers were keen to tap into another source of income, so it was a no-brainer to issue legislation to legalize sports betting in the Buckeye State.
The Ohio sports betting legislature was passed at the end of 2021, although the first retail and online sportsbooks were given a launch date of 1st January 2023. That gave plenty of time to prepare licenses and identify regulatory processes.
