Big changes are taking place in the
Ohio gambling
world, thanks to the passing of HB 29 in December 2021. Governor Mike DeWine signed off the Ohio gambling bill, which finally permitted sports betting to become a legal activity throughout the Buckeye State.

Why has there been a change to the
Ohio online gambling laws?
It was New Jersey that paved the way for the relaxation of online sports betting laws across the US. In 2018 the federal courts agreed with NJ that PASPA was unconstitutional, limiting the rights of states to set their own sports betting regulations.
Neighboring states, including Pennsylvania and West Virginia were quick to make changes in their own state legislature to legalize online sportsbooks, leading to rapid economic growth. And naturally enough, Ohio lawmakers were keen to tap into another source of income, so it was a no-brainer to issue legislation to legalize sports betting in the Buckeye State.
Are all forms of
online gambling legal in Ohio?
The Ohio sports betting legislature was passed at the end of 2021, although the first retail and online sportsbooks were given a launch date of 1st January 2023. That gave plenty of time to prepare licenses and identify regulatory processes.
So far, it’s only sports betting that’s been reviewed. As of right now, online casinos and online poker still aren’t legal in Ohio, with no notification about any possible changes. But in our experience, once a state allows legal online sportsbooks to operate, other forms of online betting often follow on quite quickly.
