The wait is over, as sports betting in Maryland is now legal, with both retail betting shops and online sportsbooks available. The ball started rolling properly back in November 2020, when the question of legalized sports wagering was put to the vote – and passed.
From there, the Maryland sports betting bill was created and signed into law by Gov. Larry Hogan in April 2021. The first retail sportsbook opened in December 2021, but it would then take a year for online sports betting to launch. Other forms of mobile gambling, including online poker in Maryland, are still not legal.

Maryland legal sports betting – A closer look
Now that we know that it is legal, let’s take a closer look at the Maryland betting laws and highlight some of the more important rules. For starters, the bill allows for up to 30 retail sportsbooks and 60 online sportsbooks to be licensed.
Added to that, there are also very few restrictions when it comes to what you can and can’t bet on. Marylanders can bet on collegiate sports as well as professional sports, and there are no exclusions in terms of betting markets. Everything from single-game wagers to player props, combos, and parlays is permitted.
