The Indiana Fever return from the FIBA Women’s World Cup break Friday night with a trip to Coca-Cola Coliseum to face the short-handed Toronto Tempo.
Indiana enters 26-14 and has already secured a playoff berth. The Fever won seven of their final nine games before the break and remain in the fight for home-court advantage in the first round. Toronto is 11-29, has been eliminated from playoff contention and enters the final stretch having lost four straight and 16 of its last 17 games.
Indiana’s offense revolves around one of the WNBA’s premier backcourts. Kelsey Mitchell averages 25.0 points per game, while Caitlin Clark averages 22.5 points and 8.4 assists. Aliyah Boston provides balance inside at 16.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Clark and Boston also return after helping the United States win gold at the FIBA World Cup.
Toronto’s situation has changed dramatically since these teams last met. Marina Mabrey, Toronto’s leading scorer at 20.8 points per game, was ruled out for the remainder of the season on September 16 because of a right adductor injury. Brittney Sykes and Aneesah Morrow are also done for the season with foot and knee injuries.
That leaves rookie Kiki Rice as one of Toronto’s most important offensive players. Rice averages 12.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists. Isabelle Harrison contributes 12.4 points and 6.5 rebounds, while Nyara Sabally averages 12.3 points and 5.3 boards.
Indiana is already 2-0 against Toronto this season. The Fever won 113-91 in Indianapolis on June 16 before winning 101-95 in Toronto on August 18. That second meeting was Mabrey’s final appearance before suffering the injury that has now ended her season.
Toronto was competitive in the August matchup, but repeating that performance without Mabrey, Sykes and Morrow will be considerably more difficult. Indiana’s combination of Clark, Mitchell and Boston gives the Fever major advantages in scoring, playmaking and half-court execution.
As of September 16, the main game line is available, but player props are not yet widely posted. The player numbers below are recommended target lines rather than confirmed sportsbook offerings.
Mitchell enters the final four games of the regular season averaging a career-high 25.0 points per game, second in the WNBA scoring race entering the World Cup break.
She scored 29 points in Indiana’s August victory over Toronto and should again receive plenty of favorable looks created by Clark’s passing.
Toronto’s depleted perimeter rotation only strengthens the matchup. If a Mitchell points prop opens around 24.5, the over is worth consideration.
Clark averages 8.4 assists per game and remains the player who determines Indiana’s offensive tempo.
Toronto must decide whether to defend Clark straight up or bring additional pressure. Trapping her creates openings for Mitchell on the perimeter and Boston around the basket.
Clark produced 14 assists in Indiana’s 113-91 victory over Toronto in June, demonstrating how difficult the matchup can become when the Fever’s shooters are converting.
Boston averages 8.3 rebounds per game and should have opportunities against a Toronto frontcourt missing Morrow, who was one of the Tempo’s strongest rebounders.
Boston recorded 18 points and 11 rebounds against Toronto in June. Her positioning and physicality should create opportunities on both the defensive glass and offensive boards.
A line around 8.5 would make the over attractive.
The under looks stronger now than it did when this preview was originally written.
Toronto has lost its three most productive scorers from much of the season in Mabrey, Sykes and Morrow. In its final four games before the break, Toronto scored 78, 78, 73 and 69 points.
Indiana is capable of reaching triple digits, but Toronto may struggle to contribute enough offense to push the combined score above 189.5.
Caitlin Clark — Indiana Fever: Averaging 22.5 points and 8.4 assists while directing one of the WNBA’s most dangerous offenses.
Kelsey Mitchell — Indiana Fever: Indiana’s leading scorer at 25.0 points per game and one of the league’s hottest offensive players entering the final week.
Aliyah Boston — Indiana Fever: Averaging 16.9 points and 8.3 rebounds and gives Indiana a substantial interior presence.
Kiki Rice — Toronto Tempo: With Mabrey and Sykes unavailable, the rookie guard should take on considerably more responsibility as both a scorer and creator.
Isabelle Harrison — Toronto Tempo: Veteran forward averaging 12.4 points and 6.5 rebounds who becomes increasingly important with Morrow unavailable.
Nyara Sabally — Toronto Tempo: Averaging 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds and gives Toronto another interior scoring option.
Indiana Fever 101, Toronto Tempo 81
Indiana -11.5Under 189.5 Total Points Kelsey Mitchell Over 24.5 Points — Target Line Aliyah Boston Over 8.5 Rebounds — Target Line
Toronto kept Indiana within six points in August, but that result becomes much less useful when evaluating Friday’s rematch because Mabrey, Sykes and Morrow are now unavailable.
The Tempo must replace more than 50 points per game of season scoring averages from those three players, placing enormous pressure on Rice, Harrison, Sabally and Toronto’s remaining rotation.
Indiana has considerably more offensive firepower. Clark should dictate the tempo, Mitchell should find favorable scoring opportunities and Boston has a chance to control the paint.
Toronto’s home crowd should provide energy early, but Indiana’s superior depth and healthy star trio should create separation as the game progresses.
Prediction: Indiana Fever 101, Toronto Tempo 81.
As of September 16, Indiana remains a 11.5-point favorite with the total at 189.5. The Fever moneyline is roughly -625 to -700 depending on sportsbook. Player-prop markets were not yet broadly available, so confirm all player lines before wagering.
