The Indiana Fever return home Tuesday night facing elimination after the Las Vegas Aces dominated Game 1 of their best-of-three first-round playoff series, 102-85.
Las Vegas shot an incredible 59.4 percent from the field, outrebounded Indiana 39-28 and controlled the game after taking a 62-47 halftime advantage. A’ja Wilson delivered one of the best performances of the opening playoff round with 38 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks.
Indiana now must find an answer for Wilson while getting considerably more production from its own star backcourt.
Caitlin Clark finished Game 1 with 15 points and 10 assists, but she shot 6-of-17, committed six turnovers and battled foul trouble. Kelsey Mitchell, Indiana’s leading scorer during the regular season, was limited to only 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting.
One encouraging development was Aliyah Boston, who returned from her lower-leg issue and produced 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists in 25 minutes. Boston’s ability to remain on the floor is critical because Indiana needs her size and physicality against Wilson.
Las Vegas received much more than Wilson’s historic performance. Jackie Young contributed 21 points and 10 assists, Chelsea Gray added 14 points and eight assists, and Jewell Loyd scored 10. The Aces consistently created quality shots and finished with 24 assists.
Indiana’s challenge is straightforward: improve its perimeter defense, keep Wilson away from her preferred spots and prevent Las Vegas from shooting nearly 60 percent again.
The Fever do have reasons for confidence. They won the regular-season series 2-1, including victories of 84-68 and 109-75, and they return to a Gainbridge Fieldhouse where they went 15-7 during the regular season.
Game 2 is simple for Indiana: win and force a deciding Game 3 in Las Vegas. Lose, and the season is over.

Wilson completely controlled Game 1, scoring 38 points on 15-of-19 shooting while adding 16 rebounds and four blocks.
Indiana will undoubtedly change its defensive approach, but doubling Wilson creates opportunities for Young, Gray and Las Vegas’ perimeter shooters.
The Aces have no reason to move away from what worked. Expect Wilson to receive another heavy volume of touches in the paint, mid-range and pick-and-roll.
If her Game 2 scoring prop opens around 27.5, the over remains attractive.
Clark still recorded 10 assists despite Indiana struggling offensively in Game 1.
Las Vegas will continue applying pressure well beyond the three-point line, which gives Clark opportunities to create advantages once she gets the ball around the first defender.
Indiana also needs more movement from Mitchell, Boston and its perimeter shooters rather than relying on Clark to create difficult shots late in possessions.
Another double-digit assist performance is realistic.
Mitchell’s Game 1 performance was one of Indiana’s biggest problems. She scored only 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting, including 1-of-6 from three.
That is well below the 24.7 points per game she averaged during the regular season.
Indiana needs Mitchell attacking immediately rather than allowing Las Vegas’ defense to settle into comfortable matchups.
At home in an elimination game, expect a much more aggressive Mitchell. A target around 20.5 provides value if the market reacts strongly to Sunday’s poor shooting performance.
Game 1 finished with 187 combined points, but Las Vegas needed an unsustainable 59.4 percent shooting performance to reach 102.
The three regular-season meetings finished with totals of 152, 184 and 170 points.
Indiana should make defensive adjustments aimed at slowing Wilson and reducing Las Vegas’ easy opportunities around the basket.
The Fever also cannot afford another high-possession shootout if the Aces are converting at elite efficiency.
A more physical playoff game in the low 180s or upper 170s is realistic.
Caitlin Clark — Indiana Fever: Finished Game 1 with 15 points and 10 assists but must reduce her six turnovers and become more efficient offensively.
Kelsey Mitchell — Indiana Fever: Indiana desperately needs a bounce-back performance after Mitchell scored only 12 points in the opener.
Aliyah Boston — Indiana Fever: Her 18-point, eight-rebound performance was one of Indiana’s biggest positives from Game 1. Her defensive assignment against Wilson remains critical.
A’ja Wilson — Las Vegas Aces: Coming off a dominant 38-point, 16-rebound, four-block performance that Indiana must somehow find a way to contain.
Jackie Young — Las Vegas Aces: Produced 21 points and 10 assists in Game 1 and consistently punished Indiana whenever extra defensive attention went toward Wilson.
Chelsea Gray — Las Vegas Aces: Veteran point guard added 14 points and eight assists in the opener and continues to control the Aces’ half-court execution.

Las Vegas was clearly the better team in Game 1, and Wilson’s dominance exposed one of Indiana’s biggest matchup problems. The Fever cannot allow her to repeatedly establish comfortable position and expect a different result.
But Indiana has several factors working in its favor Tuesday.
The Fever return home, already beat Las Vegas twice during the regular season and should get a much stronger scoring performance from Mitchell. Clark’s playmaking was still productive despite the blowout, while Boston looked healthy enough to make a major contribution.
Indiana must also avoid allowing Las Vegas’ secondary stars to dominate. Wilson scoring 30-plus is difficult enough; Young adding 21 points and 10 assists makes the Aces nearly impossible to beat.
Expect Indiana to play with significantly more defensive urgency, Mitchell to bounce back and Clark to create enough offense late to keep the Fever’s season alive.
Prediction: Indiana Fever 92, Las Vegas Aces 89.
