The WNBA playoffs begin Sunday with a fascinating first-round matchup as the No. 6 Indiana Fever visit the No. 3 Las Vegas Aces.
Indiana finished a franchise-record 28-16 while producing 96.0 points per game, the highest single-season scoring average in WNBA history. Las Vegas finished 31-13 and enters the postseason riding a seven-game winning streak after beating Phoenix 100-82 in its regular-season finale.
The matchup is especially intriguing because Indiana won the regular-season series 2-1. The Fever defeated Las Vegas 84-68 on July 5 and 109-75 on July 12 before the Aces answered with an 86-84 overtime victory in Indianapolis on August 6.
Indiana’s offense revolves around Kelsey Mitchell and Caitlin Clark, who combined to average 47 points per game this season. Mitchell averaged 25.0 points, while Clark produced 22.5 points and 8.4 assists.
The biggest concern for Indiana is Aliyah Boston’s health. Boston left the regular-season finale with a right lower-leg flare-up, while reserve guard Tyasha Harris suffered a left ankle injury and had to be carried from the floor. Their availability will be important to monitor.
Las Vegas counters with A’ja Wilson, who finished another dominant season averaging approximately 26 points and nine rebounds. Wilson scored 34 in the Aces’ regular-season finale and enters the playoffs rested and in excellent form.
Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray and Jewell Loyd give Las Vegas a deep perimeter rotation. The Aces’ current seven-game winning streak and home-court advantage make them the favorite, but Indiana’s success against Las Vegas earlier this season makes Game 1 far from predictable.
Player thresholds are recommended target lines unless confirmed by your sportsbook.
Wilson averaged about 26 points per game during the regular season and closed the year with 34 points against Phoenix.
Las Vegas will run its half-court offense through Wilson, particularly if Boston is limited. Indiana must prevent deep catches and avoid putting Wilson at the free-throw line.
In a playoff opener, expect Wilson’s minutes and shot volume to increase.
Mitchell finished the regular season averaging 25.0 points while shooting better than 51 percent from the floor and 45 percent from three.
Las Vegas will devote significant attention to Clark’s playmaking, creating opportunities for Mitchell to attack rotating defenders.
Indiana will need Mitchell’s scoring if it wants to steal Game 1 on the road.
Clark averaged 8.4 assists and continues to dictate Indiana’s offensive pace.
Las Vegas can pressure Clark with Young and Gray, but aggressive traps also create passing lanes to Mitchell, Boston and Indiana’s perimeter shooters.
Expect Clark to prioritize creating efficient opportunities rather than forcing difficult shots against the Aces’ defense.
Indiana was historically productive offensively, but playoff basketball generally places greater emphasis on half-court possessions and defensive execution.
Las Vegas allowed roughly 86 points per game, and the three regular-season meetings between these clubs finished with totals of 152, 184 and 170 points.
Two of those three games stayed comfortably below 182.5.
Caitlin Clark — Indiana Fever: Indiana’s primary playmaker finished at 22.5 points and 8.4 assists per game.
Kelsey Mitchell — Indiana Fever: The Fever’s leading scorer at 25.0 points per game and perhaps their most important shot-maker in a close playoff game.
Aliyah Boston — Indiana Fever: Her health is a major storyline. If available near full strength, her rebounding and interior defense become critical against Wilson.
A’ja Wilson — Las Vegas Aces: The centerpiece of everything Las Vegas does and the biggest matchup problem Indiana must solve.
Jackie Young — Las Vegas Aces: Averaged approximately 19 points and more than six assists while giving Las Vegas another elite two-way guard.
Chelsea Gray — Las Vegas Aces: Veteran playoff floor general who averaged 6.8 assists and controls the Aces’ half-court offense.
Las Vegas Aces 92, Indiana Fever 87
Las Vegas -3.5 — if still available Under 182.5 Total Points A’ja Wilson Over 25.5 Points — Target Line Caitlin Clark Over 7.5 Assists — Target Line
Indiana has already proven it can beat Las Vegas, winning two of the three regular-season meetings, so the Fever should enter Game 1 with confidence.
The difference is Las Vegas’ current form. The Aces have won seven straight, Wilson enters the postseason playing at an MVP level, and Las Vegas has home-court advantage in the best-of-three series.
Indiana can make this extremely competitive behind Clark and Mitchell, but Boston’s lower-leg issue creates additional uncertainty against Wilson.
Expect a close game through three quarters before Wilson, Young and Gray help Las Vegas execute better late.
Prediction: Las Vegas 92, Indiana 87.
The first round uses a best-of-three, 1-1-1 format. Las Vegas hosts Game 1, Indiana hosts Game 2, and Las Vegas would host a deciding Game 3 if necessary. Confirm Boston and Harris’ injury status and final sportsbook numbers before wagering.
