Friday night’s WNBA matchup features two teams heading in opposite directions as the Connecticut Sun visit the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Indiana enters at 25–14 and has already clinched a playoff berth, while Connecticut sits at 10–28 and has been eliminated from postseason contention.
The Fever own one of the league’s most explosive offenses, averaging 96.6 points per game while shooting 48.9 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from three-point range. Connecticut, by comparison, is averaging roughly 79 points per game.
Caitlin Clark continues to drive Indiana’s attack. She is averaging 22.1 points and 8.3 assists, while Kelsey Mitchell leads the Fever at 24.8 points per game. Mitchell’s combination of speed, perimeter shooting and shot creation gives Indiana a second elite offensive option that prevents defenses from focusing exclusively on Clark.
Aliyah Boston is another major factor, averaging 17.0 points and 8.4 rebounds. However, Boston has been dealing with a right lower-leg injury and her availability remains worth monitoring.
Connecticut enters after an 89–64 loss to Golden State and has struggled to generate consistent offense. Charlisse Leger-Walker scored a career-high 17 points in that defeat and could receive another significant opportunity Friday.
Indiana has dominated the season series, winning both previous meetings, including a 123–88 blowout on July 22. The Fever’s superior shooting and backcourt firepower give them a considerable advantage at home.
Mitchell is averaging 24.8 points and should have an excellent opportunity against a Connecticut defense that has struggled to contain high-powered offenses.
Clark’s playmaking consistently creates open looks for Mitchell, and Connecticut cannot afford to devote multiple defenders to either guard for extended stretches.
With Indiana favored by more than 16 points, Mitchell could help the Fever establish control early with another strong scoring performance.
Clark is averaging 8.3 assists per game and faces a Connecticut defense that could be forced to send additional pressure toward her.
That creates opportunities for Mitchell on the perimeter and Indiana’s frontcourt around the basket. Clark’s ability to push the pace should also generate easy transition opportunities before Connecticut can establish its defense.
Expect Indiana’s superstar to flirt with double-digit assists.
Connecticut is increasingly evaluating its younger players with the playoffs no longer possible, and Leger-Walker is coming off a career-high 17-point performance against Golden State.
Her aggressiveness should remain high against Indiana, particularly if Connecticut falls behind and must increase its offensive pace.
The potential for expanded minutes and shot attempts makes the over an intriguing option.
Indiana averages 96.6 points per game and has already scored 123 against Connecticut this season.
The Fever recently scored 113 points in a victory over Chicago and possess enough perimeter shooting to push toward triple digits again.
Connecticut does not need an elite offensive night for the over to hit if Clark, Mitchell and the Fever establish a fast pace. A final score somewhere around 100–85 would be enough to clear the number.
Caitlin Clark — Indiana Fever: Clark remains Indiana’s offensive engine at 22.1 points and 8.3 assists per game. Her transition passing and deep shooting range could overwhelm Connecticut’s defense.
Kelsey Mitchell — Indiana Fever: Mitchell leads Indiana with 24.8 points per game and should be one of the biggest beneficiaries whenever Connecticut sends additional defensive attention toward Clark.
Aliyah Boston — Indiana Fever: If available, Boston gives Indiana another significant advantage around the basket with her scoring, rebounding and interior defense. Her lower-leg injury remains something to monitor.
Charlisse Leger-Walker — Connecticut Sun: Leger-Walker is coming off a career-high 17 points and could receive another expanded offensive role as Connecticut focuses increasingly on player development.
Saniya Rivers — Connecticut Sun: Rivers provides athleticism and defensive versatility while averaging 6.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists.
Aaliyah Edwards — Connecticut Sun: Edwards gives Connecticut needed size and physicality in the frontcourt while averaging 9.6 points and 4.0 rebounds.
Indiana Fever 103, Connecticut Sun 84
Indiana -16.5Over 182.5 total pointsKelsey Mitchell over 24.5 pointsCaitlin Clark over 8.5 assists
Connecticut’s young players should compete, but the matchup strongly favors Indiana. The Fever possess superior perimeter shooting, considerably more offensive firepower and a major home-court advantage.
Clark and Mitchell should dictate the pace from the opening quarter, and Indiana has already demonstrated its ability to overwhelm Connecticut by beating the Sun 123–88 earlier this season.
Expect Connecticut to produce stretches of competitive basketball, but Indiana’s depth and scoring should eventually create separation.
Prediction: Indiana 103, Connecticut 84.
