Rucker Park is historic and has been around for more than 60 years and have seen basketball legends like Lew Alcindor, Wil Chamberlin and Dr J play there through the years. This is an excellent move by the TBT as they just made their tournament more newsworthy playing at the Rucker.
“Rucker Park has always been a dream of ours,” TBT founder and C.E.O. Jon Mugar told the press. “TBT is an open tournament format, and we want it to be a celebration of all things basketball. People assemble from the pros, from college, and the YMCA. And Rucker Park, to me, has always been the pinnacle of a melting pot for basketball. Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, and Allen Iverson are playing there against guys you’ve never heard of before. That openness epitomizes TBT.”
The Rucker is so Iconic that the NBAPA helped to renovate the park and changed the name to Greg Marius Court at Rucker Park. Check out the top new sportsbooks for betting on Basketball!
Why was the park named after Greg Marius?
Mr Marius was a young rapper with the Disco Four group when he started the Entertainers Basketball Classic in 1982, initially involving rival hip-hop crews who played one another on Harlem courts. Before long, Marius began inviting more talented players to participate. Soon, the E.B.C. became a prominent basketball tournament in Harlem, held at Holcombe Rucker Park, at West 155th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, near the site of the old Polo Grounds. The tournament evolved into something much bigger than rappers playing a basketball tournament.
Streetball is a more individual game than what we see at the N.B.A., and that has brought huge crowds to the Rucker in the past. This is a brilliant move by the TBT to draw more attention to an event that deserves more attention. The TBT is an exciting brand of basketball played by guys who either had short N.B.A. careers or just came up a little short of making it to the N.B.A. Addin Rucker park will be an exciting addition to the TBT tournament.
