The oddsmakers suggest a double-digit margin of victory for this matchup, but we should remember how these teams faced off earlier this month. On February 1st, Michigan narrowly secured a 66-63 road victory against Rutgers, and it’s worth noting that Dylan Harper did not play in that game. Fast forward to today: Rutgers appears revitalized, with Harper finding his rhythm and Ace Bailey performing as his reliable teammate. On the other hand, Michigan is currently experiencing its worst offensive stretch of the season. Additionally, it’s do-or-die time for Rutgers, as they need to win all their remaining regular-season games and make a deep run in the Big Ten tournament to have any chance of sneaking into the NCAA tournament without winning the Big Ten championship. 

In contrast, Michigan is securely positioned in ESPN Bracketologist Joe Lunardi’s projected field of 68 and doesn’t feel the same urgency to secure a win for their season. That said, I believe Michigan will come out on top at home in what should be an exciting, back-and-forth game. Rutgers struggles defensively, ranking 115th in KenPom’s Defensive Rating. I expect Michigan’s veteran leaders—Danny Wolf (12.7 points per game), Vlad Goldin (15.6 PPG), and Tre Donaldson (12.3 PPG)—to help the offense get back on track Thursday night. While Dylan Harper (19.4 PPG) and Ace Bailey (18.4 PPG) are exceptional players who can keep the game close, Rutgers’ lack of scoring options beyond these two highly touted freshmen may prove challenging on the road.
