Indiana vs Northwestern Preview
This is a massive Big Ten battle, with the Hoosiers and Wildcats tied for second place in the Big Ten behind the Purdue Boilermakers. Northwestern is coming off a massive win over Purdue this past weekend, while the Hoosiers gutted out a one-point win over the Michigan Wolverines.
Mid-January could have seen Indiana’s season spiral out of control. The Hoosiers had lost five of seven games and were 1-4 in Big Ten play. They also suffered losses to Northwestern and Penn State.
Mike Woodson’s team has won eight of the last nine matches despite suffering from injuries. The Hoosiers defeated then-No. 1 Purdue, with wins against Illinois (and Rutgers) along the way. IU is now second in the conference after a big win at Michigan.
Race Thompson could not attend Saturday’s game and is not available to play against Northwestern. Xavier Johnson is on the verge of making a comeback, and his status is still uncertain.
Trayce Jackson Davis is the heart of IU’s offense. He is a skilled player who draws fouls at a rate of over 60 per cent and attacks from the post. The versatile big is intelligent and talented, so opponents often double-team him and his passing and unselfish play allows him to make the correct decision for the Hoosiers to score.
Jalen HoodSchifino, a freshman, made great strides in his role as starting point guard. He’s second in scoring (12.6) and steals (1.0), which is a team record.
The offense of Indiana revolves around Hood-Schifino’s and Jackson-Davis, often in the pick-and-roll or out of the post. This means that the Hoosiers shoot 3s with one of the lowest shooting rates in the country.
They are efficient with their opportunities but prefer to push transition and attack the rim whenever possible.

Northwestern Wildcats Betting Tips
After the loss to Michigan’s at home, Northwestern took to the road to win back-to-back victories against Wisconsin and Ohio State.
The Wildcats won against Purdue Sunday and now are tied with Indiana for second place in the Big Ten.
Northwestern’s defense is the key to its success. It is well-spaced and can force turnovers at a top-35 rate.
The Wildcats are a robust and athletic team with a compact defense. This team uses a lot of 3s and frequent post-traps which results in turnovers.
They rank near the league average for 3-point defense but are top-20 in defending 2s. This makes sense, given Chris Collins’ coaching style.
The Wildcats will allow bigs to make mistakes by giving up a lot on defense. In their first matchup, they forced 16 turnovers against Indiana and 16 against Purdue to win by six points.
Zach Edey scored 24 but did turn the ball over six times. Northwestern won the game because Purdue couldn’t find its stroke from 3.
Boo Buie, and Chase Audige are the offense and take 27% of the shots on the floor. They are cautious with the basketball and run pick-and-roll at the seventh-highest rates in the country.
The Wildcats are efficient because they have fast-break opportunities. They also prefer to play at an accelerated pace.
They shoot 3s on more than 40% of possessions but struggle when it comes down to finishing. Northwestern is ranked in the top 200 in 2-point defense and offense.
It has held its opponents to 65 points or less in 19 of the 25 games this year.

Betting the game
Hood-Schifino played his best game the last time they met, at least on the stat line he did. Hood-Schifino scored 33 points, making 12-of-17 shots and hitting five 3s during the eventual loss. The wrong side was three assists but six turnovers; Schifino cannot turn the ball over that much if the Hoosiers are to win.
The Wildcats managed to conquer Bloomington, one of the most challenging home environments for college basketball and came out victorious. A sweep in the season series would be enough to secure an NCAA tournament berth, though it is likely NW will make it either way.
Jackson-Davis should find it difficult to withstand the defense Collins uses. He shot 8 of 19 from the field, grabbed 24 rebounds during the first matchup (seven offensive), but was often forced to leave the post.
He finished with eight assists, while Indiana shot 9 of 18 from 3.
This is a different Hoosier team this time around. How will Northwestern handle getting focused again after a great win over Purdue. TJD will have a big game, and the Hoosiers will find a way, yet again.
Prediction: Indiana -1.5
