Indiana vs Iowa Preview
Two teams from the Big Ten do battle in the Hawkeye State. Indiana is coming in after a victory of 69 to 55 at home over Kennesaw State in their previous game on December 23, though they were a 16.5 point favorite. Iowa lost 83-79 at Penn State on Sunday afternoon. They were a two-point underdog. The Hoosiers hold a 70-60 edge in the all-time series, but the Hawkeyes have won both of their previous meetings.
Indiana beat Kennesaw State to win their second consecutive game. This was almost two weeks ago. The Hoosiers now stand at 1-1 in the Big Ten and are now 10-3 for the season. In the match against Kennesaw State, Indiana was down seven points in the first half. However, Indiana rallied to tie the game at 27 after intermission. With 8:41 remaining, the Hoosiers were still tied at 43 in the second half. However, they scored six consecutive points to take a lead of 49-43. To offset the 16-of-26 showing at the charity stripe, the Hoosiers shot great from the field, hitting half of their shots, including seven of 18 shots from three-point range. They won the rebounding contest 40-28. Tamar Bates scored 19 points.
The Hoosiers average 80.1 points per contest this season. This makes them 37th most prolific offense. Indiana averages 37.2 rebounds per night and averages 17.3 assists per game. Xavier Johnson contributes 9.9 points and 4.9 assists per night. Mike Woodson’s team will be able to count on the contributions of Miller Kopp, Jalen hood-Schifino (10.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists), Tamar Bates, Malik Reneau and Trey Galloway. Indiana’s team shooting percentage is 50.7%, which is 6th in America. The Hoosiers average 7.1 three-pointers per night and sink 36.5% of all their attempts from beyond the arc. Indiana converted 69.6% free throws this season. This is below the average performance for a team at charity stripe.
Johnson (foot), last played against Kansas on December 17. There is no timetable for Johnson’s return. Jackson-Davis (undisclosed), who has missed the previous two games, is doubtful for this contest.

Iowa fell to Penn State in their latest game, losing their third straight and fourth in five games. The Hawkeyes are now at 8-6 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten. They will be looking for their first conference victory of the year here. Iowa was in a 44-26 deficit at halftime and trailed by 14 with five minutes left. The Hawkeyes climbed within two of Penn State twice in the final minute but ended at the short end. Iowa shot 44.4%, including seven out of 25 shots from three-point range. Penn State managed to shoot 54.5%. Thirty-two points and nine rebounds for Kris Murray led Iowa.

After a hot start to the season, Iowa is trending in the opposite direction and currently stands 0-3 in Big Ten. Patrick McCaffery is now out of the picture for the Hawkeyes, losing their third-leading scorer only makes matters worse. Although Indiana won back-to-back games without Jackson-Davis, those victories were against teams that were overmatched in Elon and Kennesaw State. I expect a high-scoring game; the difference will be the Hoosiers’ defense. This is a huge game for both teams as the Hoosiers’ preseason Big Ten favorites still have much to prove.
