The Indiana State Sycamores are having a special season. The Belmont Bruins are a solid team that could give the Sycamores some issues if they overlook the Bruins. The worry is that the Sycamores will be looking ahead to Saturday’s titanic conference matchup with the Drake Bulldogs. Indiana State has one of the most productive offenses in the country, and Belmont is not good defensively.
Belmont University ranks 130th nationally with an average scoring average of 77.1 points per game, shooting 47.4% overall and 37.0% from the three-point range, good enough for 49th overall shooting percentage and 45th in 3-point shooting. They make 72.5% of their free throw attempts – good enough for the 138th position overall. Malik Dia is Belmont’s leading scorer, averaging 17.3 ppg, while Cade Tyson comes second, scoring 16.8ppg on average while Ja’Kobi Gillespie averaged 16.2ppg due to injury; Keishawn Davidson leads assists by average with an average of 3.9 per contest.
Belmont’s defense ranks 326th overall and averages 78.1 points per game while holding opponents to 46.5% overall shooting and 34.2% 3-point shooting, which ranks them 331st and 250th, respectively. Belmont averages 33.3 rebounds per game, led by Dia, who averages 5.8 boards per contest; Davidson leads in steals with an average of 1.1 per contest, while Dia leads in blocked shots with an average of 0.8 per contest.
Indiana State Sycamores have averaged an impressive 86.3 points per game this season – ranking them fifth overall. Their 51.2% overall shooting and 41.0% 3-point field goal shooting rates rank third and first, respectively. Indiana State also holds the 14th-best free throw line shooting of 77.8%. Isaiah Swope leads the Sycamores in scoring with an 18.4 ppg average, and Robbie Avila averages 16.3 ppg while three other players average double-figure scoring totals.
Indiana State allows an average of 72.7 points per game, placing them 213th nationally. Indiana State opponents are holding to 43.7% overall shooting and 33.8% from three-point land; their defense has allowed 34.9 rebounds per game, led by Jayson Kent’s average of 7.8 boards per game while Swope leads in steals at an average rate of 1.6 per game. Avila leads in blocked shots with an average rate of 0.7 per game.
I look for this game to be competitive for a half, and then the Sycamore’s high-scoring offence will start to pull away slowly. Indiana State 93 Belmont 78
