Florida’s performance in the second half of the season reflects the team’s journey. Since February 1, the Gators have lost only once, falling 88-83 to Georgia on February 25. They have faced unexpected challenges in recent weeks, but one thing is clear: you can never count them out until the final whistle. Even when trailing late against back-to-back national champion UConn, they managed to find a way to win. After Alex Condon sustained an ankle injury against Maryland in the Sweet 16, the Gators held on until the 6-foot-11 player returned to help secure a double-digit victory. We also witnessed their incredible comeback from a 10-point deficit in the closing minutes against Texas Tech in the Elite Eight. In March, the Gators earned five wins against KenPom’s top 20 teams by 14 points or more, demonstrating their resilience in the face of adversity. What we’ve learned about them this month is that they are tough to beat.
A 1-3 stretch leading into the NCAA tournament raised questions about Auburn’s potential. However, it’s important to note that those three losses came against strong opponents: Tennessee, Alabama, and Texas A&M. We have since seen that this is the same team that lost only one game between December 4 and March 4, led by Johni Broome. In the first round, while Alabama State briefly took the lead over the Tigers, Auburn ultimately secured a decisive 20-point victory. They then went on to defeat a solid Creighton team by 12 points in the second round and successfully held Michigan standout Danny Wolf scoreless for the final 13 minutes in their Sweet 16 victory. Despite Johni Broome’s midgame injury, Auburn managed to hand Michigan State its first NCAA tournament loss to an SEC team under head coach Tom Izzo.
