The 2025 NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder mark a significant moment for the league, showcasing the rise of small-market teams and the success of strategic rebuilding. Here’s why this matchup is a positive development for the NBA: Many will say it’s not, but the absence of supposed big-time teams in this Finals is a refreshing change for the NBA, where bigger markets have dominated recent Championships.
This is a matchup between maybe the best offensive team and the best defensive team, the adage goes styles make fights and that makes this Finals intriguing. If the Knicks had beaten the Pacers that would not have been good for the league because the Knicks would have had no chance at winning more than a game in this series at best. With the Pacers, there is always the chance that the Pacers get hot from three-point range. The Pacers are a better matchup against the Thunder than the Knicks are.
Both the Pacers and the Thunder hail from smaller markets, yet they’ve demonstrated that with astute management and player development, they can compete at the highest level. The Thunder, under GM Sam Presti, have built a formidable team around MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, finishing the regular season with a league-best 68–14 record. Similarly, the Pacers, led by President Kevin Pritchard, have constructed a dynamic roster featuring Tyrese Haliburton and Pascal Siakam, culminating in their first Finals appearance since 2000.
How can the Finals including Indiana be a bad thing? Indiana is the home of Basketball and the tradition of the state and Basketball is immense! The Big O, Larry Bird, Bob Knight, John Wooden, the Milan Miracle of 1954, I can go on and on as to why the state of Indiana is Basketball. The Pacers being in the Finals will also lead to more discussions about the Old ABA, which the Pacers dominated winning three titles led by Mel Daniels and George McGinnis.
Both franchises have prioritized developing young talent and making strategic trades. The Thunder’s acquisition of Gilgeous-Alexander and draft picks from the Paul George trade has paid dividends, with players like Jalen Williams emerging as key contributors. The Pacers’ trade for Haliburton has transformed their offense, with his leadership and playmaking propelling them through the playoffs. The Pacers acquisition of Pascal Siakam put them over the top and don’t forget this Pacers team is not a one shot wonder, just last season they were in the Eastern Conference Finals.
This Finals matchup continues a trend of increased parity in the NBA, marking the seventh consecutive season with a different champion—a streak not seen since 1975–1980. Such diversity in championship teams reflects a more balanced and competitive league, where success isn’t confined to a few dominant franchises. Major League Baseball is having a major issue with competitive balance and the NBA has been able to steer away from that issue.
The Thunder’s success has had a tangible economic impact on Oklahoma City, generating an estimated annual impact of $590 million and supporting over 3,000 jobs. This demonstrates how a thriving NBA team can contribute significantly to its local economy and community development. It makes expansion easier to sell for the NBA. Of course the Thunder should be the Supersonics and playing in Seattle instead of OKC, but I digress.
The Finals feature compelling narratives, such as Haliburton’s rise to stardom and Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP season. These storylines not only captivate fans but also highlight the importance of player development and the impact of young stars on the league’s future. These young stars are the future of the league, not the Steph Curry’s and LeBron James. No LeBron fatigue in this series and that’s a great thing for the NBA. As LeBron fades into the sunset the NBA has many up-and-coming stars ready to take over for him and this series will exemplify that.
Whoever wins this series you can expect a celebration instead of a reason to loot and set fires. These are two Cities that have pride in their respective Cities. If a place like New York to win the expectations become much different. Ir will also be hard for fans to sell the narrative that the NBA fixes games, if they did this would not be the Finals they would want! It will become obvious that maybe the biggest issue in the NBA is horrendous officiating.
The 2025 NBA Finals between the Pacers and the Thunder exemplifies the league’s evolution towards greater parity, the success of small-market teams, and the value of strategic team-building. This matchup not only provides exciting basketball for fans but also sets a positive precedent for the league’s future.
