Small forward and shooting guard Klay Thompson agreed that there were a lot of doubtful comments directed at his team, but it didn’t let them down. “However you recognize what? You simply put that in your gas tank and also you simply maintain going. And it does undoubtedly hit totally different,” Thompson said.
Just like what Thompson said, the Warriors squad used the doubtful chatter as their fuel and presented solid proof by winning the 2022 NBA Finals on Thursday.
During the 2019 season opener against the LA Clippers, Charles Barkley even said that the Warriors would not make it to the playoffs. The team then had to swallow the hard pill when the Clippers defeated them 141-122.
Moreover, no NBA team went from a slump to winning a championship in only two years, which is why a lot of people were doubting the Warriors. Earlier this season, FiveThirtyEight predicted the Warriors to go 36-46 and gave only a 0.1 percent probability of winning the title.
However, Stephen Curry and his teammates were able to escape the small chance and even pull off an unexpected victory.
“The truth that once we began this season, the conversations about who we have been as a group and what we have been able to clearly keep in mind some specialists and speaking heads placing up the massive zero of what number of championships we might have going ahead due to every little thing that we went via,” Curry said.
After the NBA Finals ended, the talk about which player’s legacy would always happen. Curry, who also won this season’s NBA Finals MVP award, was dragged into this legacy narrative, too. Despite Curry’s record of two-time common season MVP, three-point champion, and eight-time All-Star, many people still questioned his legacy.
A Twitter account even tweeted by saying that Curry got his Finals MVP to cement the legacy. In response to that, Thompson backed Curry by saying that Curry was just doing what he could do.
“Steph was unimaginable tonight. I’m so comfortable for him to get that Finals MVP,” Thompson recalled. “Some freaking bozo saying he wanted it, I feel he’s just about established what he can do.”
Curry wasn’t the only one questioned for his record as Andrew Wiggins also got a spicy comment from Stephen A. Smith back then in April 2021. Smith said that he would trade Wiggins for a “field of cookies”.
But Wiggins proved to himself that he was worth more than he was told. He contributed to the Warriors’ defensive scheme while also making some offensive plays.
“I simply needed to show everybody unsuitable and now I’m a world champion,” Thompson said after adding NBA Champion to his resume. “Everybody’s going to have one thing to say regardless, however no matter they are saying they obtained to say I’m a world champion too.”
