The sense of shared history runs deep within the souls of Cleveland Sports fans. This shows in ways fans reminisce—wondering HOW the 1995 Cleveland Indians (Guardians) lost the World Series despite being 100-44 that season- swapping tales of learning Art Model was moving the Browns or raising a glass to toast the brightest light on Cleveland’s collective scoreboard: the 2016 NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers.
The vast majority of Cavs fans can tell you where they were when the Miracle in the Oracle happened that warm June night. They recall, in great detail, the struggle to reach downtown Cleveland and celebrate the championship with 1.3 million of their fellow fans. It was as if, in one shining moment, over 50 years of heartaches, bad breaks, and poor decisions on the part of all Cleveland sports teams were swept away.
It’s tough to pinpoint if there is a statute of limitations for reveling in past championships. After all, the 1964 NFL Championship was all Cleveland had to hold onto prior to June 2016.
While the Cavaliers have not repeated the win, today’s team seems poised to make a run deep into the playoffs. How do they stack up against the stuff of living legends? Do they have what it takes to bring another Larry O’Brien Trophy home to Cleveland?
The tenth anniversary of Cleveland’s NBA Championship is an ideal time to reflect while watching to see what comes next for the team.
Differences Between the 2016 and 2026 Cleveland Cavaliers
THEN
The 2016 Cavaliers were the franchise’s ‘gold standard’. They were a super team built around three All-Stars. No one can deny the impact of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love.
Irving’s finishing was forceful, and his lateral quickness helped define him as a player. Love was an expert at stretching the floor, and his rebounding skills put him into an elite category. James was a generational talent who, when necessary, put the team on his back and appeared to win games with his force of will. Using the iso-LeBron move also allowed the 2016 team to make lanes with certainty.
The trio cast huge shadows and were joined by numerous position players who filled in the gaps. The trio cast huge shadows. While they were joined by numerous highly skilled position players, they left little space for others to grab the spotlight.
NOW
One of the words once used to describe this Cavs team was ‘youth.’ The 2026 team rolling into the playoffs has an average of 4.6 years of NBA play, in addition to playoff experience. Speed is one of the team’s strengths, and they are in the top 10 in the league. While no one would call this team old, they now have the confidence that comes with having “ been there” before.
The mid-season acquisition of point guard/ shooting guard James Harden changed that description. Harden’s three-point efficiency and his ability to serve as the general on the floor have helped the Cavaliers reach a higher gear. The team is decidedly a “win now” franchise with the addition of the 36- year-old veteran.
All-Star shooting guard, Donovan Mitchell, leads the team as a dual threat, averaging 5.7 assists a game while finishing 7th in the NBA in points scored. In isolation, there are few players that are more difficult to defend against than Mitchell.
It would be a critical mistake to overlook the 2025 Defensive Player of the Year, center Evan Mobley. His rim protection is top-notch, but his improved interior scoring efficiency makes Mobley a dual-threat player.
As we move further away from the team that brought home a championship to Cleveland, it becomes easier to visualize an NBA Championship coming to Cleveland.
The names and styles of play have changed, but the drive for excellence and the hunger to win it all radiate from this group of bold, talented players. They are not the Big Three of a decade ago, and that’s alright. What we need most from our players is to be the best versions of themselves. After that, everything else falls into place.
