The NBA takes center stage in Mexico City Saturday afternoon when Nikola Jokić and the Denver Nuggets face Pascal Siakam and the Indiana Pacers at Arena CDMX.
This will be the NBA’s 35th game played in Mexico since 1992, more than any country outside the United States and Canada. It is also the 16th regular-season NBA game held in Mexico.
Denver enters with momentum after defeating Toronto 128-109 on Wednesday.
Jokić delivered his best performance of the young season, producing 32 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists on 13-of-19 shooting for his third triple-double. Denver shot 61.5 percent overall and erupted for 41 points in the third quarter.
That is exactly the type of offensive performance Denver hopes to carry into Mexico.
Indiana also enters on a positive note.
The Pacers snapped a five-game losing streak Wednesday with a 107-103 victory at Memphis, handing the previously 6-1 Grizzlies their second loss. Andrew Nembhard scored 22 points and Pascal Siakam added 20.
The challenge for Indiana is doing it without Tyrese Haliburton.
Haliburton will miss the Mexico City game because of a hamstring injury and is expected to remain sidelined for at least another week. Indiana has been significantly less efficient without its All-Star point guard, making Siakam and Nembhard even more important Saturday.
Denver’s greatest advantage is obvious: Jokić.
Indiana must decide whether to defend him one-on-one and risk allowing him to dominate inside or send additional defenders and allow Jokić to dissect the defense with his passing.
Neither option is particularly attractive.
The Nuggets also have Jamal Murray, who scored 42, 39 and 35 points in three of Denver’s first six games. Murray was quieter against Toronto with 14 points and seven assists, but his scoring ability gives Indiana another elite offensive threat to contain.
Indiana’s path to an upset begins with tempo.
The Pacers cannot afford to let Denver operate comfortably in half-court possessions. Indiana needs Nembhard pushing the basketball, Siakam attacking mismatches and its wings generating transition opportunities.
Siakam enters averaging 21.3 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists, making him Indiana’s clear offensive centerpiece while Haliburton is sidelined.
Nembhard’s return is equally important.
He immediately scored 22 points against Memphis after Indiana had been forced to use just six available players against Atlanta two nights earlier. Aaron Nesmith and Siakam also returned against Memphis, giving Rick Carlisle a much healthier rotation.
Indiana may not have Haliburton, but it is in a substantially better position than it was earlier in the week.
Nikola Jokić — Denver: Coming off a 32-point triple-double and remains the most difficult individual matchup in the game.
Jamal Murray — Denver: Capable of taking over offensively and has already posted multiple 35-plus-point performances this season.
Aaron Gordon — Denver: Scored 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting against Toronto and provides Denver with another strong interior finisher.
Pascal Siakam — Indiana: Indiana’s most important scorer without Haliburton and averaging more than 21 points per game.
Andrew Nembhard — Indiana: Returned against Memphis and immediately led the Pacers with 22 points.
Aaron Nesmith — Indiana: His return adds perimeter shooting, defense and needed depth to a Pacers roster hit hard by injuries.
The following are recommended target lines. Confirm official sportsbook numbers and final injury reports before wagering.
Jokić made 13 of 19 shots against Toronto and looked increasingly comfortable attacking as a scorer.
Indiana may struggle to defend him without exposing shooters around him.
Prediction: Over 27.5 points.
If Indiana sends extra defenders at Jokić, his passing becomes even more dangerous.
He recorded 11 assists Wednesday and Denver had seven players score in double figures.
Prediction: Over 9.5 assists.
With Haliburton unavailable, Indiana needs Siakam to remain aggressive.
He scored 20 against Memphis and should receive another high-volume offensive role.
Prediction: Over 20.5 points.
Nembhard returned from injury and immediately became Indiana’s leading scorer against Memphis.
His usage should remain elevated while Haliburton is sidelined.
Prediction: Over 15.5 points.
Denver needs to establish Jokić immediately and force Indiana to reveal how it intends to defend him.
The Nuggets should also continue the ball movement that produced 76 points in the paint and 128 total points against Toronto.
Defensively, Denver’s priority is containing Siakam while preventing Nembhard from creating easy transition opportunities.
Indiana must avoid turning this into a slow half-court battle dominated by Jokić.
The Pacers need pace, three-point shooting and contributions throughout the rotation.
Rebounding will also be critical. Giving Denver second opportunities while simultaneously trying to stop Jokić is a difficult formula for an upset.
Denver has won 11 of the last 12 meetings between these teams, including both meetings last season.
Indiana should be more competitive than its record suggests now that Nembhard, Nesmith and Siakam are back together, but Haliburton’s absence remains significant.
Jokić is the decisive matchup.
The Pacers can make Denver work by pushing the pace and attacking before the Nuggets get set defensively, but eventually the game should settle into half-court possessions where Denver has the superior creator.
Expect Indiana to remain competitive into the third quarter before Jokić and Murray take control.
