Juwan Howard should never coach another game for the Michigan Wolverines.
Sunday, after a blowout loss to the Wisconsin Badgers, Howard started a brawl in the post-game handshake line that engulfed both teams. He was angry with Badgers head coach Greg Gard for calling what Howard felt was a gratuitous timeout with 15 seconds left in a game Wisconsin had well in hand.

Gard appeared to be trying to talk with Howard, who became increasingly agitated. As their teams tried to separate the two, Howard reached out and struck a Wisconsin assistant coach in the head. Gard did appear to grab Howard’s arm to talk to him, and that shouldn’t have happened either, but there was no reason to bitch-slap a Wisconsin assistant coach.
Words were exchanged, but what words could make Howard made enough to throw a punch? I will tell you what it was. It was the embarrassment of getting his ass kicked that spurred this. When you listen to his explanation, it sounds like he wants us to believe he was scared for his safety! Howard needs to realize he is no longer a player but a Head Coach, a leader of men.
This was not the first time Howards conduct had caused a bench-clearing brawl. It was the second time in a year! Howard was hit with two technical fouls and was ejected in a game against Maryland last March when he clashed with then Maryland coach Mark Turgeon.
In that confrontation, an enraged Howard had to be pushed off the court by his assistant coaches. And Turgeon claimed Howard yelled, “I’m gonna f—ing kill you.” The fantastic thing about that is that the Big Ten did nothing about it, so with that being said doesn’t that make the Big Ten a little complicit in this? When you allow thug behavior like the Big Ten did last year, can you be surprised if it happens again? Tes, I said thug behavior, and I say it because when you bitch slap another man for no reason, that’s thug behavior no matter what color you are.
UM, Athletic director Warde Manuel said that Michigan would wait until they get word from the Big Ten before doing anything! The Big Ten is not Howard’s employer; that would be the University of Michigan. The University needs to do the right thing and fire Howard right now! During college basketball games, you cannot have coaches throwing punches and inciting brawls.
A College Basketball coach is supposed to develop young men for society, not to win games; I am fully aware that Universities and the NCAA are just about wins and money but come on, Juwan Howard has proven that he is not capable of leading young men.
Last year Howard explained away the Turgeon incident saying it was because he was from the south-side of Chicago! That is a stupid statement; right now, Howard is a millionaire and the head coach of a Division one college basketball team.
I know people will defend him and say he was emotional and needs a second chance, but if you go into work tomorrow and slap another worker in the face, will you be fired? That answer is a resounding yes in most places, and a college campus should be no different.
Violence against another human being because he called timeout with 15 seconds left is moronic! Juwan Howard is not emotionally mature enough to lead men, and Michigan and the Big Ten should allow him to learn that listen!
