How basketball influences child development.

Basketball is one of the most loved sports in America, with it being much loved by all age groups and with the NBA being an annual and popular event. Adults will participate, play, gamble, and watch the sport, and kids will often play and watch the sport too.

While adults will often have much love for the sport watching and gambling on it, as you can see on Fanduel, kids are also influenced by basketball too. But, in which ways?

With so much concern on the negative effects of certain sports, we can easily forget that these sports also have many benefits. Exercise helps memory and thinking, both directly and indirectly. It reduces insulin resistance, reduces inflammations and stimulates the chemicals in the brain that affect the health of brain cells, new blood vessel growth and more.

We all know the risks that come with a sedentary lifestyle, so exercise and sport participation are key, but let’s think specifically about the benefits of basketball, how it can affect kids, and influence their lives.

The benefits of youth basketball.

There are plenty of ways in which basketball as a sport can positively influence a child. Starting with endurance, as is the case for most high intensity sports. Not only are you running, but also jumping, dribbling, and having bouts of rest in between, it is considered to be total body interval training while still being fun!

It also assists in motor control, enabling us to better control our limbs. This doesn’t just mean in the traditional way, but being able to pass and shoot with expert precision takes training and practice. Thus growing muscles and controlling the position of the body. Even if they do not go on to play basketball more professionally, this can result in some handy skills in life.

It is imperative that we learn balance and coordination as kids. Hand-eye coordination is something that we need to learn that helps us in our adult lives. Working on dribbling, catching, passing and making baskets requires quick reactions and plenty of hand-eye coordination and bodily self awareness.

It also benefits us in agility, being a fast-paced sport where athletes must think fast and on their feet to play that would change momentum and direction at any moment. This assists in mental agility as well as physical agility.

Finally, possibly the most important of all, it assists in the development of social skills. Aside from the physical and mental factors, its activeness as a team sport requires communication for success. Young athletes learn from an early age the benefits of teamwork, how to pay attention to others and respond accordingly, as well as how to deal with triumph and defeat, all of which are applicable life skills.

The possible negative effects of youth basketball.

There are, however, also some negative effects to be aware of. It is key that there should not be an overemphasis on competitive success in youth sports, as this can impede children from realizing the benefits of participating and can limit their ability to reach their full potential.

Basketball for kids should not be over competitive, and a focus on results rather than enjoyment can cause the opposite effects from the benefits we previously mentioned. It is important to ensure kids play it for enjoyment, otherwise it can lead to pressure, competitiveness, and increased risks of injuries, burnouts, and a disengagement from health-promoting physical activity.

Basketball can be very beneficial for kids, and it can bring great pleasure for them, but it is important that nothing around the sport is forced or competitively structured, especially prior to adolescence.
