No. 11 Louisville opens its season Monday night against Chattanooga, beginning Pat Kelsey’s third campaign with a roster built to contend in the ACC. The opener tips at 9 p.m. on ACC Network.
The Cardinals won both exhibitions, beating Kansas 89-83 on the road before handling Mercyhurst 71-39 at home.
Chattanooga presents a different challenge. Dan Earl’s Mocs are rebuilding after a 13-19 season, bringing 11 newcomers into a rotation that must replace most of last year’s scoring.
Chattanooga must execute cleanly to prevent Louisville from building an early lead.
Flory Bidunga gives Louisville an interior threat who can influence both ends.
The Kansas transfer recorded 19 points and nine rebounds against Mercyhurst, making nine of 13 shots. His finishing provides an alternative when the Cardinals’ perimeter offense stalls.
Jackson Shelstad supplies experience in the backcourt. A preseason second-team All-ACC selection, he gives Kelsey a guard capable of organizing possessions and creating scoring opportunities.
Louisville also has Seth Trimble and Karter Knox among its perimeter options. That variety makes it difficult for Chattanooga to devote excessive attention to one scorer.
The Cardinals still need cohesion. Adrian Wooley is their only returning scholarship player, so the opener is another opportunity to establish reliable combinations and defensive communication.
Tate Darner is Chattanooga’s most established returning piece.
The sophomore averaged 9.9 points and 4.4 rebounds last season while making 53 three-pointers, a school freshman record. His shooting could help stretch Louisville’s defense and create room for teammates.
Transfer forward Tyler Houser adds experience after averaging 14.2 points and 5.4 rebounds at Delaware. His ability to contribute inside will be important against Bidunga.
The Mocs have added size, but integrating so many players takes time. They need patient possessions, purposeful movement and accurate passing to avoid feeding Louisville’s transition game.
Chattanooga also must finish defensive possessions. Forcing an initial miss accomplishes little if Louisville immediately scores on a putback.
Bidunga’s efficient exhibition finale supports interest in a modest scoring target. Louisville should look for opportunities to establish him near the basket before settling for contested outside shots.
Fourteen points clears this proposed threshold. His minutes are the main concern if Louisville builds a comfortable lead.
Bidunga collected nine rebounds against Mercyhurst and should be central to Louisville’s efforts to control the paint.
Eight rebounds is the proposed benchmark. Foul trouble, shared rebounding opportunities and reduced minutes could limit the result. This overlaps with his points prop through playing time, so the two are not independent edges.
Shelstad averaged 4.9 assists last season at Oregon. Louisville’s interior finishing and multiple perimeter options give him several potential passing targets.
Five assists would clear this proposed line. The case rests on sustained involvement and teammates converting chances; opening-night rotations and shared ball-handling duties remain uncertainties.
Darner’s established perimeter production makes him Chattanooga’s most interesting shooting target. Two made threes would clear this proposed threshold.
The Mocs may need outside scoring to counter Louisville’s interior advantage. However, Darner will face a demanding defense, and limited clean looks make this a cautious lean.
Flory Bidunga — Louisville: Interior scoring, rebounding and defensive presence.
Jackson Shelstad — Louisville: Offensive organization and playmaking.
Seth Trimble — Louisville: Backcourt experience and perimeter defense.
Karter Knox — Louisville: Another scoring option on the wing.
Tate Darner — Chattanooga: Returning production and three-point shooting.
Tyler Houser — Chattanooga: Experienced frontcourt scoring.
Louisville: Establish Bidunga, control the glass and turn defensive stops into efficient offense.
Chattanooga: Limit turnovers, find Darner in space and avoid conceding repeated second chances.
Louisville is the outright pick. Its interior advantage and experienced guards should create separation as Chattanooga’s new rotation faces sustained pressure.
Without verified odds, there is no spread or total recommendation. The projected margin should not be treated as an automatic endorsement of any available line.
Final Score Prediction: Louisville 85, Chattanooga 63.
Picks Summary: Louisville to win. Proposed props: Bidunga over 13.5 points, Bidunga over 7.5 rebounds, Shelstad over 4.5 assists and Darner over 1.5 threes.
