The Dayton Flyers men’s basketball program is on an incredible journey—one that continues to capture the heart and pride of Flyer Nation. As the 2025–26 season approaches, head coach Anthony Grant, now in his eighth year at the helm, has cemented Dayton as one of the most respected programs in NCAA Division I basketball.
Few programs match the Flyers’ consistency and tradition. Dayton has made 19 NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by their unforgettable 2020 campaign when they climbed as high as No. 3 in the AP Top 25 Poll and looked destined for a No. 1 seed before COVID-19 cut the tournament short. That moment of heartbreak only deepened the program’s resolve—resilience has become Dayton’s defining trait.
Inside UD Arena, one of college basketball’s most electrifying venues, the passion of the Red Scare student section turns every game into a spectacle. It’s more than a court—it’s a cathedral of Flyer pride.
Grant’s impact goes far beyond wins. As the Dr. Stephen B. Levitt Head Men’s Basketball Coaching Chair, he’s elevated the program both on and off the court. The endowment from Dr. Levitt stands as a historic investment in Dayton basketball’s future.
Under Grant’s leadership, Dayton has recorded four straight 20-win seasons, including marquee victories over No. 2 UConn and No. 6 Marquette last year. With those wins, Grant now ranks third all-time in UD history—a testament to his enduring success and steady hand.
But perhaps Grant’s greatest achievement is cultural. He’s built a foundation on unity, purpose, and the philosophy that “This is bigger than basketball.” That mindset carried the Flyers through the challenges of the pandemic and continues to guide the team’s identity today.
Dayton’s future looks bright thanks to a Top 25 national recruiting class, headlined by three outstanding newcomers ready to make an immediate impact:
Jaron McKie (6’3”, G, Gladwyne, PA) – A four-year standout at St. Joseph’s Prep, three-time All-Catholic First Team honoree, and two-time All-State selection. The son of NBA veteran Aaron McKie, Jaron brings elite basketball IQ and competitive fire to Dayton.
Damon Friery (6’9”, F, Cleveland, OH) – A dominant forward from St. Ignatius, Friery was named Division I All-Ohio First Team after leading his team to a state title. He eclipsed 1,000 career points and embodies the versatile modern big man.
Malcolm Thomas (6’8”, F, Mitchellville, MD) – A redshirt freshman from Villanova, Thomas was one of Maryland’s top prep players. The son of former NBA forward Etan Thomas, he brings size, defense, and athleticism to the Flyers’ frontcourt.
The Flyers also boast an impressive mix of returning talent and key transfers:
Adam Njie (6’2”, G, Bronx, NY) – A breakout star from Iona who averaged 12.2 points and 4.2 assists as a freshman. His explosive scoring and playmaking give Dayton a dynamic backcourt weapon.
Bryce Heard (6’6”, G, Chicago, IL) – A former four-star recruit from N.C. State, Heard’s high school résumé includes a state championship and a 17-point scoring average. His athleticism fits perfectly into Grant’s tempo-driven system.
Amaël L’Etang (7’1”, F, Bastia, France) – The French phenom earned RUDY Awards Rookie of the Year honors after averaging a double-double with Cholet Basket’s U-21 team. His international experience adds major depth inside.
Jaiun Simon (6’6”, F, Mableton, GA) – After redshirting last year, Simon looks ready to contribute. A proven scorer in high school (nearly 20 PPG), his development could make him an X-factor.
De’Shayne Montgomery (6’4”, G, Fort Lauderdale, FL) – The former MAAC Rookie of the Year and ex-Georgia Bulldog averaged 13.2 PPG as a freshman and is one of the most experienced guards in the Atlantic 10.
Evan Dickey (6’3”, G, Dayton, OH) – A hometown leader and SAAC representative, Dickey’s leadership and defensive presence are vital to the team’s chemistry.
Will Maxwell (6’4”, G, Oakwood, OH) – Dayton’s all-time high school scoring leader continues to develop into a reliable two-way guard.
Makai Grant (6’1”, G, Dayton, OH) – A Chaminade Julienne alum with strong family ties to coaching, Grant’s energy and commitment exemplify the Flyer spirit.
Javon Bennett (5’10”, G, Orlando, FL) – One of college basketball’s toughest guards. A former NEC Rookie of the Year, Bennett averaged 11.6 points last season and scored a career-high 30 points vs. Florida Atlantic in the NIT.
Jordan Derkack (6’5”, G, Colonia, NJ) – A transfer from Rutgers and former NEC Player of the Year, Derkack averaged 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists at Merrimack. His leadership and size bring balance to the backcourt.
Jacob Conner (6’10”, F, Dayton, OH) – A versatile forward who played key minutes last year after transferring from Marshall. His length and shooting make him a perfect fit in Dayton’s modern offense.
Keonte Jones (6’6”, F, Madison, WI) – A graduate transfer and All-Big West First Team honoree from Cal State Northridge, Jones averaged 13.1 points and 9 rebounds per game, ranking among the top 20 nationally in double-doubles.
With elite leadership, a deep roster, and one of the best fanbases in the nation, the 2025–26 Dayton Flyers are primed for a breakthrough season. From seasoned veterans to rising freshmen, every player reflects the same core values—grit, unity, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
As Coach Grant often reminds his team, “We’re not just building a program—we’re building something that lasts.”
The future of Flyer basketball has never looked brighter.
