The Northern Kentucky Norse have built one of the most inspiring stories in modern college basketball. Representing Northern Kentucky University, the program has gone from a quiet newcomer in NCAA Division I to a true mid-major contender, earning respect across the country and the unwavering support of Norse Nation.
NKU made its jump to NCAA Division I in the 2012-13 season, beginning in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Those early years laid the foundation, and by the time the Norse joined the Horizon League in 2015-16, the program was ready for the next step.
Since then, NKU has captured three NCAA Tournament berths, including their most recent in 2023. What was once a developmental program has turned into a team capable of hanging with the nation’s best. Fans now flood Truist Arena in black, gold, and white, creating a true home-court advantage.
At the center of NKU’s rise is head coach Darrin McKinley Horn, a fiery leader whose coaching journey has shaped him into one of the Horizon League’s best.
Background: Born December 24, 1972, Horn sharpened his coaching skills as an assistant at the University of Texas before leading programs at Western Kentucky and South Carolina.
NKU Tenure: Named NKU’s sixth head coach on April 23, 2019, Horn has since turned the Norse into a mid-major powerhouse.
Record of Success: With more than 115 wins, two Horizon League titles, and two NCAA Tournament appearances, Horn has elevated the program to new heights.
In 2023, Horn celebrated his 250th career victory in dramatic fashion—winning the Horizon League Championship. He now stands as NKU’s all-time winningest coach in the Division I era, ranking among the most successful coaches in school history alongside Norse legend Ken Shields.
One of the most intriguing aspects of NKU’s recent teams has been the absence of a traditional center. Instead, the Norse rely on versatility, with forwards and guards sharing responsibilities typically given to big men.
This approach reflects the evolution of college basketball—faster, smaller lineups that emphasize spacing and adaptability. While it poses challenges against taller teams, NKU’s toughness and balance often turn the so-called weakness into a strength.
The 2025-26 roster brings size and athleticism at the forward positions, giving the Norse a formidable frontcourt.
LJ Wells (6’8”, 220 lbs, Senior, Eau Claire, WI): A seasoned leader with physicality and poise.
Addison Archer (6’9”, 195 lbs, Junior, Charlotte, NC): A rangy athlete who adds energy after a stint at Ranger College.
Juanma Ruiz (6’9”, 200 lbs, Freshman, Begíjar, Spain): A Real Betis product making his American debut.
Kael Robinson (6’7”, 220 lbs, Graduate Student, Hamilton, New Zealand): A veteran presence with international and college experience at Montana State Billings and Rocky Mountain.
Versatility continues with a promising group of swing players.
Ryan Tolliver (6’7”, 220 lbs, Freshman, Hartford, CT): A strong guard/forward from Northwest Catholic HS.
Donovan Rakotonanahary (6’6”, 190 lbs, Redshirt Freshman, Antavaro, Madagascar): Oak Hill Academy product with size and skill.
As always, the Norse backcourt brings energy, quickness, and perimeter scoring. Key contributors for 2025-26 include:
Dan Gherezgher (6’4”, 180 lbs, Senior, Brookfield, WI): A two-way guard who transferred from Michigan Tech.
Shawn Nelson (6’3”, 195 lbs, Grad, Miami, FL): Brings veteran leadership and scoring punch.
Bryce Darbyshire (6’4”, 180 lbs, R-Sophomore, Cincinnati, OH): A local product with breakout potential.
Ethan Elliott (6’3”, 190 lbs, Freshman, Perth, Australia): Adds international flair after excelling in NBL1 play.
Donovan Oday (6’2”, 195 lbs, Senior, Arlington, TX): A transfer with big-game experience.
Tae Dozier (6’5”, 170 lbs, Grad, Louisville, KY): A lanky wing scorer with a history of production.
JJ Apathjang (6’4”, 185 lbs, Freshman, Salt Lake City, UT): An exciting rookie with strong defensive instincts.
Mitchel Minor (5’10”, 165 lbs, Senior, Taylor Mill, KY): A spark plug guard who thrives on hustle.
Northern Kentucky men’s basketball has come a long way in just over a decade at the Division I level. With Coach Horn’s leadership, an adaptable roster, and a fanbase that bleeds black and gold, the Norse are poised to chase even bigger dreams in 2025-26 and beyond.
The journey has already been incredible—but for NKU, it feels like the best is still yet to come.
