Counting Down the Final 16 Teams

The Sweet 16 is where March Madness gets real.

The pretenders are gone. The lucky runs start to fade. What’s left are teams that can actually win this thing—or at least make you believe they can.

But not all Sweet 16 teams are created equal.

Some are built for a title. Some are just happy to be here. And a few are dangerous enough to blow up the entire bracket.

Let’s count them down. Check out the Top Sportsbooks for betting on the Madness!

16) Iowa Hawkeyes

The Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball come into the Sweet 16 as one of the most dangerous teams at the bottom of this list—and it starts with their head coach, Ben McCollum.

McCollum has built a reputation as one of the sharpest basketball minds in the country, and his ability to prepare a team in short-turnaround, one-and-done situations makes Iowa a legitimate threat to pull another upset. His teams are disciplined, efficient, and extremely well-coached on both ends of the floor.

Iowa doesn’t overwhelm you with elite athleticism, but they make up for it with execution and basketball IQ. They control tempo, take care of the ball, and force opponents to play their style.

That’s what makes them tricky in March.

They won’t beat themselves, and if you’re not sharp, they’ll expose you. The question is whether they have enough firepower to keep up with the elite teams remaining.

But with McCollum on the sideline?

They’ve got a real shot to make this even more interesting.

15) Alabama Crimson Tide

The Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball might be the most unpredictable team left in the field.

When Alabama is locked in, they look like a national title contender. Their second-round performance showed exactly what this team can be when everything is clicking—tempo, shooting, and confidence all aligned.

They can overwhelm teams quickly with pace and scoring bursts that are hard to match.

But here’s the problem:

You don’t always know which Alabama team you’re going to get.

This group has been inconsistent all season. Defensive lapses and cold shooting stretches have cost them in big moments. If those issues resurface, they won’t survive the Sweet 16.

Still, if they play like they did in their last game, they can beat anyone on this list.

That’s what makes them dangerous—and hard to trust.

14) Texas Longhorns

The Texas Longhorns men’s basketball are the definition of a team peaking at the right time.

This season was disappointing for long stretches. Expectations were high, and for much of the year, Texas didn’t meet them. But March has been a different story.

They’ve found rhythm.

They’re defending better. They’re executing late. And most importantly, they’re playing with confidence.

The win over Gonzaga proved this isn’t a fluke. Texas can win tight games, make clutch plays, and handle pressure.

The question now is sustainability.

Can they keep this level of play going against better teams?

If they can, they’re more than just a Cinderella—they’re a legitimate threat.

13) St. John’s Red Storm

St. John’s Red Storm men’s basketball is one of the tougher teams to evaluate.

They’re well-coached, disciplined, and play with an edge. That alone makes them dangerous in March.

But let’s be honest about their second-round win over Kansas—it wasn’t impressive.

Both teams played poorly. It was sloppy, inconsistent, and far from high-level basketball.

That doesn’t mean St. John’s isn’t good.

It just means we still don’t fully know what they are.

They defend well, they compete, and they won’t beat themselves. But against elite competition, they’re going to need more offensively.

If they find that, they could climb quickly.

If not, this is probably where the run ends.

12) Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Nebraska Cornhuskers men’s basketball are one of the best stories left in the tournament—and they’re more than just a feel-good team.

They are tough.

They are physical.

And most importantly, they believe.

This team has built its identity on defense, effort, and execution. They don’t beat themselves, and they don’t back down from anyone.

What makes Nebraska dangerous is their mindset.

They’re not satisfied just being here. They’re playing like a team that thinks it can win the whole thing.

And that matters in March.

They may not have the same talent level as the teams above them, but they have something just as important right now—confidence and cohesion.

11) Arkansas Razorbacks

The Arkansas Razorbacks men’s basketball might be the hottest team in the country.

This is a group that has found its groove at exactly the right time. They’re playing fast, confident, and aggressive on both ends of the floor.

Arkansas thrives on chaos. Check out the Top Parlay Picks for the Sweet 16!

They pressure defensively, create turnovers, and turn those into easy offense. When they get rolling, they’re incredibly difficult to slow down.

The key for Arkansas is discipline.

If they stay under control and don’t force things, they can beat anyone. But if they get sloppy, they can beat themselves just as quickly.

Right now, though?

Nobody wants to play them.

10) Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball might be the biggest underachiever left in the field—but also one of the most dangerous.

This team has the talent.

They have the size. They have the defense. They have the experience.

But they haven’t always put it together consistently.

That said, in March, that doesn’t matter anymore.

All that matters is what you do now.

And Tennessee is capable of beating anyone left.

If they play to their potential, they’re a Final Four team.

The question is—will they?

9) UConn Huskies

The UConn Huskies men’s basketball aren’t the same dominant force that won recent national titles.

But they’re still dangerous.

They still have size, experience, and the ability to control games in the half court.

UConn knows how to win in March. That matters.

They don’t panic. They execute. And they’ve been in these moments before.

They may not be as dominant as past versions, but they are absolutely capable of beating anyone on a given night.

8) Illinois Fighting Illini

Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball is built for this time of year.

They’re big. They’re physical. And they’ve been tested all season.

Illinois can win multiple ways:

  • Inside

  • On the glass

  • In a defensive battle

They don’t rely on one style, which makes them incredibly difficult to prepare for.

This is a team that could absolutely make a run.

7) Iowa State Cyclones

Iowa State Cyclones men’s basketball is one of the best defensive teams in the country.

They make everything difficult.

They pressure, rotate, and force teams into bad decisions. If you’re not disciplined offensively, Iowa State will expose you.

They also have quality wins, proving they can beat top competition.

The question is offense.

Can they score enough when it matters?

If they can, they’re a real threat.

6) Houston Cougars

Houston Cougars men’s basketball has the best defense in the tournament.

It’s suffocating.

They control tempo, limit possessions, and make every game a grind.

But here’s the issue:

Can they score enough?

If the offense struggles, they’re vulnerable. But if they get just enough scoring, they can beat anyone.

5) Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue Boilermakers men’s basketball is experienced, tough, and well-led by Braden Smith.

They don’t make mistakes.

They execute. Check out our March Madness Betting Tips and Sites.

And they know how to win close games.

That experience matters in March.

4) Michigan State Spartans

Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball has the most important piece in March:

A great guard.

Jeremy Fears Jr. is the best guard in this tournament.

And guards win in March.

That alone makes Michigan State a serious contender.

3) Duke Blue Devils

Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball is talented—but there are questions.

The officiating helped them against Siena.

And what happened to TCU was, frankly, unacceptable.

That leaves doubts.

Still, the talent is undeniable.

2) Arizona Wildcats

Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball has been elite all season.

Balanced, deep, and experienced.

They’ve proven they can win in multiple ways.

1) Michigan Wolverines

Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball has been the best team all season.

Best resume.

Most consistent.

Most complete.

They are the team to beat.
