No. 11 Louisville continues its season-opening homestand Saturday afternoon when the Cardinals welcome in-state opponent Morehead State to the KFC Yum! Center.
Louisville enters 1-0 after defeating Chattanooga 84-70 in its season opener. The Cardinals looked dominant during the first half, racing to a 56-35 advantage before being outscored 35-28 after halftime.
That second-half drop-off gives head coach Pat Kelsey something to emphasize, but the opening 20 minutes demonstrated why Louisville begins the year ranked among the nation’s top teams.
The Cardinals shot 56.8 percent in the first half, forced 18 turnovers overall and finished with 12 steals. Louisville also grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and held a 20-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
Flory Bidunga immediately made an impact in his Louisville debut.
The Kansas transfer scored 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting while adding nine rebounds and three steals. Bidunga entered Louisville after averaging 13.3 points, nine rebounds and 2.6 blocks during his sophomore season at Kansas.
He was hardly alone.
Adrian Wooley scored 15 points, Jackson Shelstad and Seth Trimble each scored 13, and Karter Knox grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds off the bench. Trimble also led Louisville with five assists.
Morehead State arrives at 1-1 after experiencing two dramatically different games.
The Eagles opened with an 83-58 loss at Western Kentucky, then exploded offensively Thursday night in a 114-60 victory over Virginia University-Lynchburg.
Morehead State shot 60 percent from the floor in that victory and made 15 three-pointers.
Kyrell Shaw scored a career-high 28 points and hit six three-pointers. Clayton Parker added 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while Dalman Alexander and Tayvion Tangiora each recorded double-doubles. The Eagles also finished with 30 assists and outrebounded Virginia-Lynchburg 49-25.
The obvious question is how much of that offense can carry over against Louisville’s length, athleticism and pressure.
Louisville should have a major advantage around the basket.
Bidunga gives Kelsey an elite interior finisher and rebounder, while Álvaro Folgueiras, Knox and the Cardinals’ bigger guards make Louisville difficult to match physically.
Morehead State has some size with the 6-foot-8 Parker, 6-foot-8 Alexander and 6-foot-7 Tangiora, but none offers the same combination of power and athleticism that Bidunga brings.
Louisville can also pressure Morehead State with several different guards.
Wooley recorded four steals in the opener, Bidunga had three and Shelstad and Knox added two apiece. That defensive activity helped Louisville turn Chattanooga’s 18 turnovers into 20 points.
If the Cardinals generate similar pressure Saturday, Morehead State could struggle to consistently initiate its half-court offense.
The Eagles need the three-point shot.
Morehead State made 15 triples Thursday, and Shaw has hit 6 of 10 from three through two games. Parker has also made all four of his three-point attempts while averaging a team-high 18 points per game.
That perimeter shooting could be important because Louisville made just 9 of 35 three-pointers against Chattanooga.
Morehead State also needs Chase Dawson to handle Louisville’s pressure. Dawson is averaging 14 points per game while shooting 68.8 percent from the field through the first two contests.
The Eagles cannot afford extended turnover problems or scoring droughts. Louisville is capable of turning a close game into a 15-point margin in only a few possessions.
Flory Bidunga — Louisville: Sixteen points, nine rebounds and three steals in his Cardinals debut. Louisville should continue attacking through him inside.
Adrian Wooley — Louisville: Scored 15 points and recorded four steals against Chattanooga while committing no turnovers.
Jackson Shelstad — Louisville: The Oregon transfer scored 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made three three-pointers in his Louisville debut.
Clayton Parker — Morehead State: Leads the Eagles at 18 points per game while shooting 70.6 percent from the floor through two games.
Kyrell Shaw — Morehead State: Averaging 14.5 points and shooting 60 percent from three. His perimeter shooting is essential to Morehead State’s upset hopes.
Chase Dawson — Morehead State: Averaging 14 points and gives the Eagles another experienced ball-handler against Louisville’s pressure.
College player props vary by sportsbook and jurisdiction. These are recommended target lines, not confirmed sportsbook offerings.
Bidunga immediately established himself as Louisville’s primary interior scorer against Chattanooga.
Morehead State does not have an obvious defensive matchup capable of keeping him away from the rim.
Prediction: Over 14.5 points.
Bidunga finished one rebound short of a double-double in his first Louisville game.
His combination of size, athleticism and offensive rebounding ability makes another nine-plus rebound performance realistic.
Prediction: Over 8.5 rebounds.
Trimble recorded five assists against Chattanooga and has plenty of weapons around him.
Bidunga’s interior presence and Louisville’s perimeter depth should provide multiple assist opportunities.
Prediction: Over 4.5 assists.
Shaw erupted for six three-pointers Thursday and has made six of his first 10 attempts from beyond the arc this season.
Morehead State may need a high-volume perimeter attack if Louisville controls the paint.
Prediction: Over 1.5 made three-pointers.
Louisville needs to establish Bidunga early, pressure Morehead State’s guards and avoid the second-half offensive stagnation that appeared against Chattanooga.
The Cardinals also need better perimeter efficiency after shooting only 25.7 percent from three in the opener.
If Louisville combines its defensive pressure with even average outside shooting, the talent gap becomes substantial.
The Eagles need to make three-pointers, limit turnovers and keep Louisville off the offensive glass.
Morehead State also cannot allow Louisville to create another avalanche like the Cardinals’ 56-point opening half against Chattanooga.
Keeping the game close for the first 10 minutes would be important. An early Louisville run could allow the home crowd and Cardinals’ pressure to take over.
A widely available, reliable point spread and total were not yet posted in the sources checked, so there is no reason to invent one.
Louisville should be a substantial favorite based on rankings, roster strength and home-court advantage.
Morehead State’s best chance to outperform expectations comes from three-point shooting. The Eagles have multiple guards capable of making shots, but Louisville’s ability to force turnovers and dominate around the rim makes the Cardinals difficult to oppose outright.
Louisville leads the all-time series 32-12 and won the most recent meeting 93-45 in 2024. Morehead State’s most memorable victory in the series came in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, when the Eagles stunned Louisville 62-61.
Another upset would require an extraordinary shooting performance.
Morehead State should be able to score more effectively than Chattanooga did during Louisville’s dominant opening half, especially if Shaw stays hot from three.
But Louisville has significant advantages in depth, defensive pressure, rebounding and interior scoring.
Expect Bidunga to control the paint, Louisville’s guards to create transition opportunities and the Cardinals to gradually pull away after Morehead State keeps the game respectable early.
