No. 23 Kentucky opens its regular season Tuesday night against Manhattan, giving Mark Pope’s Wildcats an opportunity to turn preseason progress into a convincing opening victory.
Kentucky finished exhibition play 3-0, closing with a 90-76 overtime win over UCF. The final margin hides how difficult that game became: Alex Wilkins needed a late basket to force overtime before Kentucky dominated the extra period 19-5.
This is the programs’ first meeting. John Gallagher’s Jaspers face a demanding introduction to their schedule, with Kentucky’s size, shooting and home crowd creating several challenges at once.
Kentucky has several ways to generate offense.
Milan Momcilovic scored 19 points against UCF, freshman Mason Williams added 18 and Wilkins finished with 12. Malachi Moreno contributed 16 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists.
Moreno’s passing could be especially important against Manhattan. When a big man can find cutters and shooters, defenders must choose between protecting the paint and staying attached to perimeter threats.
The Wildcats also recorded 23 assists on 32 baskets against UCF. That willingness to share the ball gives Kentucky a strong foundation, provided it avoids careless passes and rushed attempts.
Kentucky’s exhibition opponents shot a combined 35.4 percent from the field. Maintaining that defensive standard would make Manhattan’s upset path extremely narrow.
The Jaspers need experienced guard Ben Tweedy to help organize possessions and produce efficient offense.
The Colgate transfer averaged 9.4 points last season, started all 33 games and made 42 of 109 three-point attempts. His combination of shooting and experience gives Manhattan someone capable of punishing defensive lapses.
Manhattan must prevent turnovers from becoming transition baskets and keep the Wildcats from stacking second-chance opportunities. Simply slowing the pace will not be enough if possessions end with difficult shots.
Gallagher’s team also needs contributions beyond Tweedy. Forward Isaac Johnson and the supporting rotation must provide enough offensive balance to keep Kentucky from concentrating its attention on one player.
Momcilovic’s exhibition finale highlighted his scoring value. Kentucky’s interior passing and ball movement should create opportunities for him to work against a shifting defense.
Fifteen points clears this proposed target. The primary risk is playing time: a comfortable lead could reduce his second-half minutes.
Moreno’s 14-rebound performance against UCF makes him a natural player to watch on the glass.
Eight rebounds would clear this target, but his previous total came in 37 minutes during an overtime game. A shorter workload, foul trouble or a wide margin could substantially reduce his opportunities.
Williams supplied 18 points against UCF, showing he can contribute without starting.
Ten points is the proposed benchmark. His scoring potential is appealing, but this remains a rotation-dependent lean: Kentucky has several offensive options, and one exhibition does not guarantee consistent shot volume.
Tweedy’s previous shooting production offers a basis for considering a two-three-pointer target.
Manhattan may need outside shooting to offset Kentucky’s interior advantage. The concern is shot quality: Kentucky’s length could make clean attempts difficult, making this the most speculative selection.
Milan Momcilovic — Kentucky: Perimeter scoring and timely shot-making.
Malachi Moreno — Kentucky: Rebounding, interior finishing and passing.
Mason Williams — Kentucky: Scoring off the bench.
Alex Wilkins — Kentucky: Late-clock creation and backcourt composure.
Ben Tweedy — Manhattan: Shooting and offensive organization.
Isaac Johnson — Manhattan: Frontcourt support against Kentucky’s size.
Kentucky: Finish defensive possessions, move the ball and sustain concentration after building a lead.
Manhattan: Protect the basketball, limit second chances and turn perimeter opportunities into points.
Kentucky has the stronger overall matchup and should establish separation as its scoring options wear down Manhattan’s defense.
Without verified odds, there is no spread or total recommendation. A projected comfortable win does not justify backing Kentucky at any number.
Final Score Prediction: Kentucky 88, Manhattan 62.
Picks Summary: Kentucky to win. Proposed props: Momcilovic over 14.5 points, Moreno over 7.5 rebounds, Williams over 9.5 points and Tweedy over 1.5 threes.
