His performances earned him a scholarship to play for the University of Iowa, a dream destination for the homegrown talent.
Street joined the Iowa Hawkeyes in 1990 and immediately made an impact. As a forward, he was known for his relentless energy, rebounding prowess, and leadership on and off the court. By his junior season, he had become one of the team’s most indispensable players.
During the 1992-93 season, Street averaged 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, cementing his reputation as one of the Big Ten’s toughest competitors. One of his most notable accomplishments was setting the Iowa record for consecutive made free throws (34), a testament to his dedication to improvement.
On January 19, 1993, just three days after playing in a game against Duke, Street’s life was tragically cut short in a car accident near Iowa City. The news of his passing sent shockwaves throughout the basketball world and devastated the Iowa community. He was just 20 years old.
Even decades after his passing, Chris Street’s legacy remains strong. The University of Iowa established the Chris Street Award, given annually to the Hawkeye player who best exemplifies his spirit, work ethic, and commitment to the team. Additionally, his number 40 jersey was retired, ensuring his presence would always be felt in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Chris Street Memorial Basketball Tournament is held annually in his hometown, bringing together young athletes and fans to celebrate his love for the game.
