Leading up to today’s announcement between Indiana and Kansas, most national media pundits thought that Mgbako was going to be a Kansas Jayhawk; why would they not think that? The Jayhawks won a National Championship just a year ago, and the Hoosiers haven’t been to a Final Four in two decades.
Kansas is a team that has run the offense through wing position for the most part over the last five years.
A look at the last two Jayhawks teams, you see the success Bill Self has had with Christian Braun, Jalen Wilson, Gradey Dick, and Ochai Obaji; all are wings in the 6’4-6’8 range like Mgbako, so why wouldn’t he want to be a Jayhawk?
Indiana’s offense, as Coach Woodson has said, has run through the post the last two years because the Hoosiers’ best player was Trayce Jackson Davis.
I would assume that Coach Woodson has told Mgbako that the offense, if he comes, would now run through the wing. With Hunter Dickinson now a Jayhawks, maybe Mgbako thought that the Jayhawks may become more of a post team now. Coach Woodson ran his offense through guys like Joe Johnson and Carmelo Anthony when he was an NBA coach, and I would think Woody prefers to run the offense in that way.
With Mgbako in the fold at Indiana the Hoosiers have to have the best team the school has seen in a decade.
The addition from the portal of Ware, Sparks and Walker shows that Woody is a big hitter when it comes to recruiting. Those additions, along with what the Hoosiers already have, in my estimation, make Indiana a Top Ten team headed into this upcoming season.
The return of Xavier Johnson will give the Hoosiers a needed point guard, and if X has any issues then freshman Gabe Cupps will be rolling into Bloomington to save the day!
Today could be the day that Hoosier fans remember some day as the day the Hoosiers became relevant again! Thanks Coach Woodson!!!
