As we head into the season’s final week, Purdue has clinched at least a share of the Big Ten Championship. Minnesota has clinched last; it looks like. Multiple teams seemingly are sitting on the bubble as we head into the final week and almost all of this week’s games are huge when it comes to seeding for the Big Ten tournament.
The Gophers have had a miserable season, and it continued last week. Illinois and Maryland beat the Gophers. The Gophers have played hard this season they just don’t have the talent to compete in the Big Ten.
The Buckeyes have been in a tailspin for well over a month, and they started off last week with a loss to Penn State at home, but they finally got back in the win column against the Illinois Fighting Illini.
The Badgers started the week with a massive win over Iowa but finished with a loss at Michigan. The Badgers have a game against Purdue, and if they want to have any shot at the NCAA Tournament, it will be a must-win.
A road win against Ohio State helped the Nittany Lions shot at getting into March Madness but a Sunday home loss to Rutgers hurt matters. Penn State is a good basketball team, but they are running out of time.
The Cornhuskers have been the most improved team since the start of the season and are now above .500. They only played one game last week as they took care of Minnesota.
Amazingly, a team with this much talent struggles to get into the tournament. The Wolverines got a huge road win at Rutgers and a home win against Wisconsin. The Wolverines are a dangerous team, and they get a shot at a quad-one-road win against Indiana this weekend.
The Spartans started the week out with a dominating quad-one win over Indiana. They gave all of that away by blowing a thirteen-point lead with 90 seconds left against Iowa on Saturday. The Spartans must secure a few wins over the next two weeks to safely make the Tournament.
The Illini did what the Illini do; they started out the week with a big win against Northwestern and finished with an atrocious double-digit loss at Ohio State. You never know which Illini team will show up.
Iowa had an improbable comeback win against Michigan State; too bad they started the week out with a bad double-digit loss at Wisconsin. Barring a collapse in the next two weeks, the hawkeyes should be in the tournament field.
The Scarlet Knights played awful in a double-digit home loss to Michigan but followed that up with a nice road win at Penn State.
The Wildcats had a real shot at their first Big Ten Basketball championship. Unfortunately, they blew that chance with two bad losses at Illinois and Maryland.
Maryland had a great week as they blew out Minnesota and Northwestern at home this past week. The Terps are one of the biggest surprises in the Big Ten this season.
Purdue has been stumbling the past couple of weeks, and the bottom fell out on Saturday night as the Indiana Hoosiers manhandled them at home. Purdue is a dangerous team, but the guard play must improve if the Boilermakers want to advance to the second weekend of March madness.
The Hoosiers have been the best team this season’s second half. The win over Purdue was huge as the Hoosiers had not won at Mackey arena in a decade. The Hoosiers did it with out the normal dominating performance from Trayce Jackson Davis as Jalen Hood Schifino, Miller Kopp, and Trey Galloway picked up the slack. If those three continue to play at a high level the Hoosiers are a threat to make a deep run in March.
