USA vs. China 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Preview: Prediction, Players to Watch & 4 Prop Bets

Friday, September 4, 2026 Matchup: 🇺🇸 USA vs. 🇨🇳 China Tournament: FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup — Group D Time: 8:15 AM ET Location: Max-Schmeling-Halle — Berlin, Germany TV: TNT / truTV Streaming: HBO Max / Courtside 1891 FIBA World Ranking: USA No. 1 | China No. 4

The United States begins its pursuit of a fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup championship Friday morning with one of the biggest games of the opening round, facing China in Berlin.

It is a rematch of the 2022 World Cup championship game, when Team USA defeated China 83-61 to capture its fourth straight title. The Americans have historically dominated the matchup, owning a 15-0 record against China in FIBA’s head-to-head database.

China, however, remains one of the strongest programs in international women’s basketball, making this a legitimate early test for a U.S. roster combining established champions with some of the brightest young stars in the sport.

A New-Look Team USA

The United States remains the tournament favorite, but this roster represents an interesting mix of generations.

Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray, Kahleah Copper and Jackie Young provide championship experience, while Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, Angel Reese, Aliyah Boston, Rhyne Howard, Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron add another wave of elite talent.

A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum were originally selected but were ruled out before the tournament, with Iriafen and Citron joining the final roster.

That puts additional attention on Stewart, who should serve as one of America’s primary interior scoring options, and Clark, whose passing and three-point range could be especially difficult for China to defend.

Clark and Bueckers will both be making their senior World Cup debuts, giving Team USA two dynamic guards capable of changing a game quickly.

China’s Size Could Create Problems

China’s biggest advantage is obvious: size.

The Chinese roster pool features established international stars Han Xu and Li Yueru, along with towering young center Zhang Ziyu. The combination gives China the ability to challenge the United States around the basket and potentially create second-chance opportunities.

Han was named to the 2022 World Cup All-Star Five, while Li was China’s efficiency leader in the 2022 championship game against the United States.

China’s recent preparation results have been inconsistent, however. It lost twice to Australia in July, dropped games against Nigeria and Italy and narrowly lost 72-71 to Spain on August 30.

Against the depth and athleticism of the Americans, turnovers could become a major problem.

Players to Watch

Caitlin Clark — USA

Clark’s international debut on the World Cup stage will be one of the tournament’s biggest storylines. Her ability to stretch defenses from well beyond the three-point line could open the paint for Stewart, Boston and Reese.

Her passing may be even more important. If China commits extra defenders to Clark, she has the vision to find cutters and shooters for easy opportunities.

Breanna Stewart — USA

Without Wilson, Stewart becomes even more important.

The former World Cup MVP gives the Americans scoring, rebounding, defense and international experience. China has tremendous size, but Stewart’s versatility can force its centers away from the basket.

Han Xu — China

Han may be China’s most important player.

Her length provides rim protection while her offensive skill allows her to score without remaining exclusively around the basket. China needs a major performance from Han to stay within striking distance.

Li Yueru — China

Li gives China another physical presence inside. Keeping Boston, Reese and Stewart off the offensive glass will be one of her biggest assignments.

Keys to Victory

For the United States, the formula should begin with pace. Team USA has superior guard depth and should look to turn defensive rebounds and turnovers into transition opportunities before China’s big lineup can establish itself defensively.

China needs the opposite type of game. Slowing the pace, controlling the boards, feeding its centers and limiting turnovers would give China its best opportunity to make the Americans uncomfortable.

China’s size could force Team USA to attack from the perimeter. Clark should have plenty of opportunities to create open shots for Stewart, Copper, Boston and the other American scorers.

Stewart should receive plenty of touches as one of Team USA’s primary offensive options and can attack China’s bigger defenders both inside and from the perimeter.

The Americans can rotate elite defenders throughout the game. If Team USA increases the pace and forces turnovers, China could struggle to consistently generate quality half-court possessions.

Prop thresholds are suggested betting angles; check available sportsbook markets and lines before wagering.

Game Prediction

USA 91, China 67

China’s size should challenge the United States early, particularly around the basket, but America’s depth eventually becomes the difference.

Clark’s playmaking, Stewart’s versatility and waves of elite defenders should allow the Americans to increase the tempo and gradually pull away.

Conclusion

USA vs. China is an excellent opening statement game for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

China enters with legitimate size, international experience and memories of reaching the 2022 championship game. But the United States counters with unmatched depth and a fascinating combination of proven champions and young stars.

For Clark, Bueckers and Reese, Friday represents the beginning of their first senior World Cup journey. For Stewart and the American veterans, it represents another opportunity to extend one of international basketball’s greatest dynasties.

The road to a fifth consecutive World Cup championship starts Friday morning in Berlin—and China will provide Team USA with an immediate test.
