Infielder Danny Mendick and outfielder Adam Engel were placed on the 10-day injured list by the team on Thursday. Mendick suffered an ACL tear in his right knee. Engel injured his right hamstring. Check out the best bookmakers for betting on baseball!
The injury occurred at the end of the second inning of the White Sox’s 9-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in the series finale on Wednesday. Santiago Espinal hit a fly ball near the walls between third base and left field. Jake Burger, Adam Haseley, and Mendick all converged on the ball, and as Haseley made the catch, he collided with left fielder Adam Haseley on a foul call.
As trainers approached, Mendick collapsed to the ground for several minutes and had to be helped off the field at first. He appeared to be unable to move his right leg as trainers escorted him back to the dugout. The team stated at the time that he left the game due to “right knee discomfort.”
Mendick will require surgery, but no specific date has been set. He said there was no need to be concerned about the injury.
“It should be pretty generic,” Mendick said of his upcoming surgery. “Everything else is good. The MCL and all that stuff is all good. Just a generic ACL.”
Despite the short IL stint, Mendick’s season is over. He was seen walking on crutches in the White Sox clubhouse on Thursday, and he stated that he was expected to be ready for Spring Training 2023. In 31 games, he batted.289 with three home runs, 15 RBIs, and a.786 OPS.
Engel strained his hamstring in the third inning on Wednesday. He’d previously suffered a similar injury and said Thursday that this one didn’t appear to be too serious.
“Same part of the hamstring but a different muscle,” Engel said.
“It’s nowhere near as bad as what I experienced last year. So I’m optimistic that it should be on the shorter side of an IL stint.”
Tim Anderson had only recently returned from the injured list when the accident occurred. And because Anderson was resting his groin injury on Wednesday, Leury Garcia took over as leadoff hitter when the White Sox came back for the third inning.
Engel joins Yoan Moncada, AJ Pollock, and Joe Kelly as Red Sox players who have suffered hamstring strains this season. On Thursday, center fielder Luis Robert was held out of the starting lineup due to an unspecified injury.
Manager Tony La Russa expressed hope that Robert would be available on Friday. Because of a hip injury, first baseman Jose Abreu was demoted to designated hitter once more. Jimenez has been on a rehab assignment with Charlotte since April 24 due to a right hamstring tendon tear.
Lucas Giolito was sidelined due to an abdominal strain. Josh Harrison left a game with a right triceps contusion after being hit by a pitch. X-rays came back negative, and the team said he is doing well.
Sosa replaced Harrison in the starting lineup. Sosa hit.331/.384/.549 with 14 home runs and 48 RBI in 62 games for Birmingham. On Thursday, he entered in the sixth inning against the Orioles. Tony La Russa, the team’s manager, has mentioned that he will play in at least one game of the series.
