There is no team in the league that can compete with the 2022 Yankees so far. Even though they lost on Sunday, snapping a nine-game winning streak, they beat the Rays 4-2 on Monday in Florida. The game was almost unprecedented in terms of individual performance. Check out the best New Betting sites for betting on baseball.
Gerrit Cole pitched a no-hitter over seven innings on Monday. He dominated the game for the most part, striking out 12 batters in 7 1/3 innings. He was penalized with one run allowed after the runner he left on base scored.
Anthony Rizzo also homered in the first inning on offense, and Gleyber Torres scored on an error in the seventh inning after doubling and stealing third. The Rays tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Josh Donaldson also singled, and Aaron Hicks followed with a booming triple: Rays right fielder Manuel Margot was hauled off the field with a foot injury. For insurance, Hicks would score on Jose Trevino’s sac fly. Wandy Peralta secured the victory in the ninth inning.
Cole’s near-no-hitter propelled the Yankees to a 50-17 record. They are 16-2 with a +66 run differential in June. This was supposed to be a chance for the AL East’s second and third-place teams to catch up, but the Yankees have gone 6-1 in the last seven days against the Rays and Blue Jays.
There is no other MLB team with fewer than 24 losses. Nobody else has more than 45 victories. Because of their strong start, the Yankees will win 97 games even if they finish 47-48. A 50-45 record would suffice to reach 100 victories.
There are obvious parallels to the 1998 Yankees team, which set the all-time win record and won the World Series. Despite some similarities, these teams appear to have won 50 games in a variety of ways.
For starters, there was no Aaron Judge on the 1998 Yankees. Tino Martinez led the team with 28 home runs at the end of the season. Derek Jeter led the league in bWAR with 7.5. Judge already has 25 home runs, more than any other 1998 Yankee other than Martinez or Bernie Williams (26), and 3.3 bWAR. The star right fielder would have 7.6 bWAR if he played 149 games as Jeter did.
However, the Yankees had a little more depth. Judge, Anthony Rizzo, Gleyber Torres, and Giancarlo Stanton all have OPSs above .800. Williams, Darryl Strawberry, Paul O’Neill, Derek Jeter, Martinez, Scott Brosius, and Jorge Posada all had an OPS of at least .800 on the 1998 team.
The 1998 team was also way faster. Both Derek Jeter and Chuck Knoblauch stole 30 and 31 bases, respectively. They have 19 more steals than the entire 2022 Yankees team. The 2022 team, on the other hand, has a significant advantage in pitching. ERAs of less than 3.30 are held by Cole, Nestor Cortes, Jameson Taillon, Luis Severino, and Jordan Montgomery. Orlando Hernandez was the sole starting pitcher on the 1998 Yankees with an ERA less than 3.13.
And then there’s the pitching, where Wandy Peralta, Michael King, Clarke Schmidt, and Clay Holmes all have ERAs under 3.00, while Mariano Rivera and Graeme Lloyd were the only relievers to do so on the 1998 team.
According to Stathead, the Yankees have a combined 2.84 ERA at this point in the season, while the 1998 Yankees finished the year at 3.82 and had a 3.94 ERA through the first 67 games of the season.
