The New York Mets (35-77) are quickly establishing themselves as one the best teams in the National League. The Mets have built a substantial cushion in the NL East with six consecutive wins. This advantage they will be looking to capitalize on as they embark on a 10-game West Coast road trip. In 2021, the Dodgers had a strong defense of their title. They went 106-56 in the regular season to finish one game behind the San Francisco Giants in National League West. This record earned the Dodgers home-field advantage in the Wild Card match, where they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals. They then advanced to the National League Championship Series where they lost to the eventual World Series champion Atlanta Braves. Los Angeles got a little revenge on the Braves by signing Freddie Freeman to a six-year contract to anchor their middle lineup. The Dodgers have built a strong lead in the loaded NL West early, thanks to a series of solid depth moves. This series is a useful measuring stick for both sides.
Right-hander Taijuan Walker (3-0; 2.83 ERA) will be sent to the plate by the Mets tonight. Walker earned his third win of this season, giving up only two runs in five innings against the Philadelphia Phillies. Righty Tony Gonsolin (5-0; 1.80 ERA) will be the Dodgers’ starting pitcher. He has been a phenom to start to the 2022 season. Gonsolin won his fifth win last Saturday by allowing only two runs in six innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
