The Twins purchased a starter from the Cincinnati Reds and a closer from the Baltimore Orioles. Minnesota acquired Tyler Mahle in a trade with the Reds for Spencer Steer, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Steve Hajjar, a left-handed starting pitching prospect. Minnesota traded Jorge Lopez to the Orioles for right-handed pitcher Yennier Cao and pitching prospects Juan Rojas and Cade Povich. Povich, Rojas and Nunez are right-handed.
Mahle, Newport Beach, California, has a record of five wins and seven losses this season. He has thrown 104 1/3 innings and allowed 91 hits, 51 earned runs, 39 walks, and 114 strikeouts. His earned run average is 4.40. His WHIP is 1.25.
Lopez of Caguas (Puerto Rico) was named an All-Star in 2022 for the first time. His record was four wins, six losses, 19 saves, and an earned run average of 1.68. Lopez gave up 30 hits, nine earned runs, 17 walks, and a WHIP of 0.97 in 44 1/3 innings. Lopez was previously a pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers and the Kansas City Royals.
Everyone believed Boston was in a mad flurry of activity after Christian Vazquez was traded to the Houston Astros. When you thought the Red Sox were going to trade more of their talent, they got Eric Hosmer from San Diego Padres, Tommy Pham from Cincinnati Reds, and Reese McGuire, a catcher from the Chicago White Sox.
Hosmer was an All-Star on the Royals’ World Series team in 2015 and was traded to Boston by the Padres for Jay Groome. Hosmer, a Miami, Florida native, was sold to Boston along with outfield prospect Max Ferguson and Jay Groome, a starting pitching prospect. Hosmer’s batting average was.272 in 90 games with eight home runs, 40 batted in and eight RBI. He had 32 runs in 335 at-bats and 369 plate appearances. He also had 16 doubles, 33 walks and 131 total bases.
Pham, a Las Vegas, Nevada player, was traded for a player to name later or cash considerations. As he has been previously with the St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres, and the Cincinnati Reds, he is now joining his fifth team. Pham’s batting average was.238 in 91 games with 11 home runs, 39 runs batted in and 11 RBI. There were 42 walks and 42 hits. Pham scored 57 runs in 387 plate appearances. He also had 11 doubles, one triple and seven stolen bases.
A player that will be revealed later. McGuire, Seattle, Washington, was traded from Chicago to Boston. Cash considerations were also offered for Jake Diekman; McGuire was the Red Sox’s catcher depth after Vazquez’s departure. He batted.225 and had ten runs batted into. McGuire had 166 plate appearances and scored 12 runs and 34 RBIs. He also had nine doubles and six walks, 43 total bases and five sacrifice bunts: his on-base percentage was.261, and his slugging percentage was.285. McGuire played for the Toronto Blue Jays before he joined the White Sox.
With Boston, Diekman’s record was five wins and one loss over 44 games. He had thrown 38 1/3 innings and allowed 27 hits, 18 earned runs and 30 walks. He also had one save, and an earned run, averaging 4.23. His WHIP was 1.49. Diekman has previously been with the Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks, the Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics, and Kansas City Royals.
