The Cleveland Guardians are two victories away from the World Series. The Tampa Bay Rays need an answer before that opportunity gets even closer.
Cleveland won Thursday’s Game 3 by a 3–2 score, taking a 2–1 lead in the American League Championship Series. Petey Halpin delivered the decisive two-run homer in the fifth inning, giving the Guardians enough offense to win another close contest.
For bettors, Game 4 presents a different pitching challenge. Nick Martinez starts for Tampa Bay, while Cleveland’s opening assignment remains unsettled.
My early lean is toward the Rays evening the series. Martinez provides a clearer starting-pitching foundation, although Cleveland’s recent execution makes this a modest selection.

The strongest reason to consider Tampa Bay is Martinez’s ability to limit free baserunners.
He finished the regular season 15–6 with a 3.10 ERA and 1.09 WHIP across 180 innings. He issued only 26 walks, giving the Rays a starter whose success depends more on control and contact management than overwhelming strikeout totals.
That approach can work against Cleveland, provided Tampa Bay supports him defensively and avoids extending innings through mistakes.
The Rays’ offense needs to create more sustained pressure. Their best path is to reach base, move runners and force Cleveland to make pitching decisions with traffic aboard.
A bullpen game creates changing matchups, so Tampa Bay’s hitters must adjust quickly. Waiting for the same pitcher to come around a third time may not be an option.
At -104, the Rays do not require a substantial favorite’s investment. Martinez gives them a credible path to controlling the early innings, but the offense still has to provide enough support.
I prefer the moneyline to the -1.5 run line because another narrow result looks plausible.
Cleveland’s strongest argument is its ability to win without requiring a major offensive performance.
Thursday was another example. The Guardians needed one decisive swing from Halpin and enough run prevention to protect the advantage.
The challenge today is assembling the innings before the late-game relievers enter.
Cleveland’s starting assignment remained unannounced when checked. Joey Cantillo, Tanner Bibee and Slade Cecconi are potential options to supply innings, making the eventual pitching arrangement important to the betting evaluation.
A bullpen game can disrupt Tampa Bay’s timing and create favorable matchups. It also increases the number of pitchers who must execute, leaving more opportunities for a walk or misplaced pitch to change an inning.
Offensively, Cleveland should make Martinez work without becoming overly passive. His control means the Guardians cannot simply expect walks to generate opportunities.
My concern is that Cleveland needs several pitchers to perform effectively while Tampa Bay has a more straightforward opening plan. The Guardians remain a credible choice at even money, but I give the Rays a narrow edge.
These are betting leans. Confirm starting lineups, pitching assignments, available markets and prices before selecting a prop.
Martinez is my preferred pitching-prop target.
Three strikeouts cashes the displayed over-2.5 market, listed at +111 when checked. His regular-season strikeout total was modest, so this selection depends on receiving enough innings rather than expecting a dominant strikeout performance.
An early pitching change is the main risk.
Ramírez remains my preferred Cleveland hitter to consider.
Through eight postseason games, he has 11 hits in 30 at-bats. That production supports looking at a single-hit market, although a short stretch of results should not override tonight’s matchup or price.
One single is enough, and he may receive opportunities against Tampa Bay’s relievers later.
Díaz offers a straightforward way to back a Tampa Bay hitter without requiring the Rays to win.
Cleveland’s changing pitching matchups make a precise projection difficult. That is a reason to check the announced opener and batting order before making the selection.
I prefer the single-hit market to requiring an extra-base performance.
DeLauter is another Cleveland option worth considering.
He has nine hits in 30 postseason at-bats, giving the Guardians production from another important lineup spot.
The single-hit market keeps the requirement manageable against Martinez. Compare prices carefully, since a heavily juiced selection can offer limited value even when the player is appealing.
Tampa Bay must capitalize on early opportunities. Allowing Cleveland’s opening pitchers to escape trouble could make the later innings more difficult.
Cleveland must avoid free baserunners. Walks can undermine the matchup advantages a bullpen game is intended to create.
Both teams must protect outs. With the total at 6.5, an error or unnecessary baserunning risk could have a significant effect.
My early pick is Rays moneyline at -104, subject to Cleveland’s confirmed pitching plan.
Martinez gives Tampa Bay a reliable opening option, and I expect enough offense to produce a narrow victory. Cleveland’s ability to win close games keeps this from being a high-confidence selection.
For the total, I lean under 6.5 at +100. The low threshold leaves little room for a big inning, making it secondary to the side.
Final prediction: Tampa Bay wins 3–2 and evens the ALCS at 2–2.
