The Tampa Bay Rays answered Cleveland’s opening victory. Now the American League Championship Series moves to Progressive Field with neither team holding an advantage.
Tampa Bay won Tuesday’s Game 2 by a 3–1 score behind six scoreless innings from Freddy Peralta. A José Ramírez error helped open the door to a three-run fourth inning, giving the Rays enough offense to even the best-of-seven series at 1–1.
For bettors, Game 3 presents another intriguing pitching matchup. Gavin Williams starts for Cleveland against Griffin Jax, with the Guardians favored at home.
My lean is toward Cleveland taking the series lead, with the moneyline offering a more straightforward approach than asking the Guardians to win by multiple runs.

Tampa Bay’s Game 2 victory demonstrated how dangerous the Rays can be when their pitching keeps the game under control.
They did not need a major offensive outburst. They capitalized on an opening, protected their lead and prevented Cleveland from producing another late rally.
Jax now gets the starting assignment. His regular-season work as a starter deserves attention: he posted a 3.14 ERA across 103⅓ innings in that role. His overall numbers were less favorable because his relief appearances were less effective.
That distinction matters when evaluating Tampa Bay’s chances. Treating Jax strictly as a reliever would overlook the work that earned him this opportunity.
The challenge is handling Williams without letting his strikeout ability dictate every inning. Tampa Bay needs disciplined at-bats, contact when opportunities appear and enough baserunners to make Cleveland’s starter work.
At +117, the Rays are a credible underdog. Their pitching gives them a path to another close victory, but I give Cleveland a narrow edge because of Williams’ ability to take control of an outing.
The strongest reason to back Cleveland is Williams.
He finished the regular season with 248 strikeouts across 184⅓ innings, along with a 3.76 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Those strikeouts give the Guardians a way to escape trouble without relying on a ball finding a defender.
His postseason work has been especially encouraging. Williams recorded 24 strikeouts across 11⅔ innings in the ALDS, giving Cleveland an effective option whenever he took the mound.
The offense still has to provide support. Cleveland’s Game 1 production did not carry into Game 2, and the Guardians cannot assume returning home will solve the matchup.
Against Jax, they need to avoid chasing an immediate breakthrough. Productive at-bats, selective swings and pressure throughout the lineup offer a better path than waiting for one hitter to deliver everything.
My preference is the moneyline. The low total and Tampa Bay’s pitching make a one-run result plausible, which reduces the appeal of Cleveland’s -1.5 run line.
The primary risk is Williams pitching well while the Guardians struggle to convert scoring opportunities.
These are betting leans. Confirm starting lineups, available markets and prices before selecting a prop.
Williams is my preferred pitching-prop target.
Seven strikeouts cashes the displayed over-6.5 market, listed at +104 when checked. His regular-season strikeout production and strong October performances provide a reasonable foundation, although workload and pitch efficiency remain important.
Long innings could reduce his opportunities even if he is missing bats.
Ramírez remains my preferred Cleveland hitter to consider.
A single-hit selection keeps the requirement manageable and gives him opportunities against both Jax and Tampa Bay’s relievers. His switch-hitting ability also helps as the pitching matchups change.
The available price matters. Avoid treating a familiar name as an automatic selection when the return is too small.
Aranda offers a straightforward way to back a Tampa Bay hitter without requiring the Rays to win.
His displayed single-hit market was -133 when checked. Against Williams, I prefer that target to a more aggressive total-bases or home-run selection.
Confirm his starting spot and batting-order position before committing.
DeLauter is another Cleveland option worth considering if the price is reasonable.
A single-hit market allows ordinary contact to cash and avoids requiring an extra-base performance. His opportunities against Tampa Bay’s bullpen also matter if Jax leaves before DeLauter’s final plate appearances.
Confirm the lineup and compare prices before making the selection.
Tampa Bay must avoid chasing Williams’ strikeout pitches. Making him throw strikes offers a better path than expanding the zone.
Cleveland must finish scoring opportunities. A strong pitching performance still needs offensive support.
Both teams must protect outs. With the total at 6.5, an error or unnecessary walk could have a significant effect.
My pick is Guardians moneyline at -122.
Williams gives Cleveland a strong starting-pitching foundation, and I expect enough offense for a narrow home victory. Jax’s effectiveness as a starter keeps this from being a high-confidence selection.
For the total, I lean under 6.5 at +106. The low threshold leaves little room for a big inning, so it remains secondary to the side.
Final prediction: Cleveland wins 3–2 and takes a 2–1 lead in the ALCS.
