The MLB season has come down to just two teams after a 162-game schedule.
World Series odds list the Houston Astros as the favorite to win their second title in five seasons. After beating the San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves in consecutive series, the Philadelphia Phillies remain underdogs.
The Astros are in the middle of a possible burgeoning dynasty and the Phillies are facing pretty long odds. The Phillies win totals for the season are low but they have been one of the best teams in baseball over the past couple of months and they have won three straight series as underdogs.

The Philadelphia Phillies have returned to the World Series for their first appearance since 2009, when they lost in six games to the Yankees. This year also ends a 10-year-old streak of missing out on postseason baseball. It almost seemed like it came out of thin air.
Before the 2022 season began, the odds of the Phillies winning the Fall Classic were +2,500. These odds had increased to +5,000 by August 1. Even though they had gone 18-11 in August, the Phillies played a mediocre season with a record of 14-17 to end the season. They finished second among all 12 playoff teams with a record of 87-75. They came in third place in the NL East, behind the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, who were both 101-win giants. The Phillies won the NL pennant after all the dust settled.
They’ve been underdogs throughout the postseason, and they looked completely cooked up until the last inning of Game 1 against the Cardinals. The Phillies trailed 2-0 and scored six runs in the ninth to win that game 6-3. They then defeated St. Louis in Game 2. The Cardinals were a bit of a paper tiger and would likely be unable to win the NLDS against their defending champion Braves. After splitting Games 1 and 2, Philadelphia outscored Atlanta 17-4 and swept Atlanta to reach the NLCS.
The Phillies split the second and third games against the Padres before winning three consecutive games. Bryce Harper completed the deal in Game 8 with a go-ahead, two-run home run — his fifth postseason hit — that secured the win.
Adding key players on offense was key to the team’s unexpected success. They have provided lineup protection for Bryce Harper, the two-time NL MVP. Harper will be more difficult to pitch around because the front office has signed Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos. Castellanos can still be a good slugger, even though he has struggled. He hit.313 in the ALDS against Atlanta with five RBI, so that’s something.
They also boast a formidable one-two punch at the top of the pitching rotation, in co-aces Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler. Even though the Padres stomped Nola, he was still unhittable against St. Louis and Atlanta.
The Houston Astros had a different story. Houston was one of the favourites to win the World Series. they dominated the competition, earning the American League’s best record of 106-56. This is one win short of the franchise record of 107 in 2019.
Although Justin Verlander isn’t the entire story, it has been a significant part of the story. The 39-year-old missed 2021 and was only able to pitch six innings in 2020 because of Tommy John surgery. While many pitchers can return from the procedure, it can take time to regain their previous form. We got Verlander’s vintage in 2022 when the right-hander was 18-4, with a 1.75 ERA and 0.83 WHIP and 185 strikeouts over 175 innings. This includes time lost due to a calf strain.
Houston boasted the most balanced roster of MLB players and won the AL West by16 games over the Seattle Mariners. They took the division lead on May 17 and held it for the remainder of the season.
The Astros are a perfectly constructed team and are superior to the Phillies in almost every way. The Astros are stronger when it comes to starting pitching and they also have an elite bullpen. It would be great if the Cinderella Phillies could make this a series but the Astros will be to strong.
