Although the New York Mets’ starting pitching staff has been their strength, there are many questions about the future of this unit. Only Max Scherzer, out of the five original starters, is under contract next season. Option decisions could see Carlos Carrasco, Taijuan Walker, and Chris Bassitt on the market. While some of these names will return, the Mets will need more pitching to support the rotation in case of injury. Jose Butto is one name you should be paying attention to on this front. Butto signed as an international free agent with the Mets in 2019 for a $5,000 signing bonus. This makes sense, considering that he was a young unknown pitching prospect. Butto has had a great season. He went 4-6 last season with a 3.83 ERA and struck out 110 batters in 98.2 innings. Butto’s fastball, which averages between 92 and 94 miles per hour, was only.226 by opponents. It tremendously compliments his low-80s off-speed pitches. Butto’s curveball is slightly below average. It could make the difference between becoming a starter and a reliever at the big-league level.
Butto’s 2022 season has been a success. He is currently 3-4 with a 3.64 ERA and has pitched 47 innings, striking out 61 batters. According to MLB.com, Butto is the Mets’ 12th most promising prospect. He was added to the 40-man roster to protect him against the Rule V Draft. This shows that the Mets believe in his potential. Butto’s next move will be to AAA Syracuse, but the Mets may need him to help in the bullpen.
Mets have already gone through several minor-leaguers to help strengthen their bullpen, with Collin Holderman and Adonis Medina making notable appearances, Stephen Nogosek, Stephen Nogosek, and Yoan Lopez. Butto is already on the 40-man roster and has two excellent pitches. He could be called up late in the season if he continues to succeed.
