The Yankees should see an uptick from Carlos Rodon’s return, yet without Aaron Judge on board by early August, their lineup could remain too pedestrian, No Judge by Mid-August will mean no Yankees in the playoffs this year.
The Jays have made some moves that have hurt them this season, but this is still a dangerous team.
Kim Ng will need to impress in her first trade deadline as an official buyer, especially considering this dangerous team can compete come October with the right moves being made.
The Diamondbacks had been red-hot, leapfrogging past the Dodgers by a decent margin before faltering and losing momentum over their last 26 games – only Zac Gallen provided sufficient starting pitching support for Arizona to compete against Los Angeles for first place.
Nobody saw this coming, but the Reds are hot. The question will be, can they get the pitching to put them over the top in the second half of the season? Will they make a move to get more pitching? It will be interesting to see how the Reds’ front office handles this.
The Dodgers need Julio Urias and Clayton Kershaw back healthy as soon as possible; I believe they’ll make moves ahead of the deadline to secure another top arm.
The Rangers had been an elite team through June but have fallen back down in recent weeks, going 8-12 and starting pitching underperforming as expected. Chris Young made intelligent moves such as adding lefty reliever Aroldis Chapman; unfortunately, Josh Sborz, their high-leverage righty reliever, has since ruptured an Achilles tendon.
The Rays began the season at championship level. Unfortunately, three starting pitchers have since been sidelined: Jeffrey Springs and Drew Rasmussen are no longer with them; Shane McClanahan will return shortly after the break following back tightness issues.
An unfortunate six-loss-in-seven-games stretch jolted the fan base. Yet without panic, General Manager Mike Elias reached out and added the unique dynamics brought by Jordan Westburg and Colton Cowser to add to their squad. The Orioles will over take the Rays in the second half of the season.
The Atlanta Braves appear to be baseball’s most complete team; however, trades and injuries could quickly alter this outlook. But, make no mistake about it, at this point in the season the Braves are the best team in baseball.
