Over/Under: 8.5 Runs

Probable Pitchers: Nick Lodolo vs. Sean Burke

The Cincinnati Reds open a three-game road series against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night at Rate Field, with left-hander Nick Lodolo scheduled to return from the injured list against right-hander Sean Burke.

The pitching matchup creates one of the biggest storylines of the game. Lodolo will be making his first Major League start since July 11 after dealing with a blister on his left index finger. Burke, meanwhile, enters at 7-6 with a 3.08 ERA and has developed into one of Chicago’s most reliable starters.

Current betting markets favor Chicago. FanDuel’s line listed by Covers has the White Sox at -148 and Cincinnati at +134, with Chicago -1.5 at +146. The total sits at 8.5 runs, with the under priced at -124 at the time of the check. Action Network was slightly higher on Chicago at -152 while also listing the total at 8.5.

Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago White Sox Prediction & Game Preview

Cincinnati arrives in Chicago looking to generate more consistent offense against one of the American League’s better-performing teams. The Reds enter at 56-61, while Chicago stands at 61-56 and owns a strong 36-22 record at Rate Field. Cincinnati is 27-30 away from home.

The matchup starts with Burke. The 26-year-old right-hander has accumulated 144 strikeouts in 128⅔ innings while carrying a 3.08 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. His ability to miss bats could become particularly important against a Cincinnati lineup containing several aggressive hitters.

Elly De La Cruz remains Cincinnati’s most dangerous all-around offensive weapon. He enters the matchup batting .271 with a .353 on-base percentage, .499 slugging percentage, 20 home runs and 21 stolen bases. Sal Stewart has supplied additional middle-of-the-order production with 25 home runs and 87 RBIs.

However, Burke’s strikeout ability presents a difficult matchup. Action Network lists his strikeout rate at 10.07 per nine innings, and his recent performances have been even more impressive. Over his last five starts, Burke owns a 1.50 ERA while averaging six innings and 7.6 strikeouts per appearance. He recorded 10 strikeouts against both the Yankees and Astros and nine against the Athletics during that stretch.

Cincinnati counters with Lodolo, whose return could be extremely important for an injury-depleted rotation. Lodolo is 3-2 with a 4.60 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 50 strikeouts across 62⅔ innings. MLB confirms that Tuesday will be his first start since July 11 following the finger-blister issue.

Chicago possesses several dangerous bats capable of challenging a left-handed starter. Miguel Vargas has 24 home runs with a .810 OPS, while Colson Montgomery has hit 26 homers. Munetaka Murakami has provided significant power with 26 home runs and a .539 slugging percentage. Randal Grichuk is another potential matchup weapon against Lodolo, carrying a .553 slugging percentage in limited playing time.

The White Sox deserve to be favored because of Burke’s advantage on the mound, Chicago’s home record and the uncertainty surrounding Lodolo’s workload in his first game back from the injured list.

The total is more complicated. Chicago has enough power to challenge Lodolo, but Burke’s recent dominance creates the possibility that Cincinnati struggles to generate significant offense. That makes the under 8.5 slightly more attractive than the over.

Sean Burke’s strikeout production makes over 5.5 strikeouts the strongest player-prop target in this matchup.

Burke has recorded 144 strikeouts in 128⅔ innings this season, giving him a strikeout rate of approximately 10 per nine innings.

His recent form makes the matchup even more appealing. Burke has averaged 7.6 strikeouts over his last five starts, reaching double figures against both New York and Houston while recording nine against the Athletics.

Cincinnati’s lineup contains power, but several important hitters have also accumulated significant strikeout totals. De La Cruz has struck out 117 times, Stewart 112 times and Eugenio Suárez 125 times.

Burke does not necessarily need an exceptionally deep outing to reach six strikeouts. His swing-and-miss ability gives him a realistic path to the number by the fifth or sixth inning.

Recommended play: Burke Over 5.5 Strikeouts if 5.5 is available.

Miguel Vargas provides Chicago with an appealing right-handed power matchup against Lodolo.

Vargas enters Tuesday batting .235 with a .343 on-base percentage and .467 slugging percentage. He has produced 24 home runs, 26 doubles and 67 RBIs across 116 games.

The matchup becomes more interesting because Lodolo has not pitched in the majors since July 11. Although Cincinnati would not activate him unless the club believed he was physically ready, command and sharpness can be difficult to predict after approximately one month between Major League starts.

Vargas has enough extra-base power that one well-struck ball could cash a 1.5-total-bases prop. Two singles would accomplish the same result.

Chicago should also place Vargas in a prominent position in the batting order, maximizing his opportunities against Lodolo and Cincinnati’s bullpen.

Recommended play: Vargas Over 1.5 Total Bases if offered at 1.5.

Lodolo’s outs-recorded market could provide another interesting angle.

Under 17.5 outs would require Cincinnati’s left-hander to leave the game before completing six innings.

Ordinarily that might be a difficult under to support, but Tuesday is not an ordinary start. MLB confirms that Lodolo is returning from the injured list following a left index-finger blister and has not started since July 11.

His season numbers have also been inconsistent. Lodolo owns a 4.60 ERA and 1.47 WHIP while allowing 65 hits and 27 walks across 62⅔ innings.

Chicago can build a lineup capable of forcing him to work. Vargas and Randal Grichuk provide right-handed power, while Montgomery and Murakami have both already surpassed 25 home runs.

Cincinnati may also be unwilling to aggressively extend Lodolo if his pitch count rises quickly in his first start back.

Recommended play: Lodolo Under 17.5 Outs if that is the posted number.

Unlike the player-prop targets above, 8.5 is the verified current full-game total. FanDuel was offering under 8.5 at -124, while Action Network showed under 8.5 at -125 when checked.

Burke is the primary reason to lean toward the under.

Across his last five starts, he has posted a 1.50 ERA while surrendering an average of only one earned run per outing. Four of those five starts reached at least six innings, and he allowed zero earned runs against both the Yankees and Blue Jays.

Chicago could do damage against Lodolo, but Cincinnati’s left-hander does not necessarily need a dominant performance for the under to cash. If he limits the White Sox to three or four runs before turning the game over to the bullpen, Burke could keep the combined score below nine.

A 4-2, 4-3 or 5-3 result would all remain under the posted number.

The risk comes from Lodolo’s uncertain sharpness following the layoff. If Chicago reaches him early, the game could move toward the over quickly.

Still, Burke’s recent performance gives the under enough support to make it the preferred total.

Pitching Matchup: Returning Left-Hander vs. Surging Right-Hander

Nick Lodolo

LHP, Cincinnati Reds

Lodolo enters Tuesday at 3-2 with a 4.60 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 50 strikeouts across 62⅔ innings. He has allowed 65 hits, 27 walks and nine home runs in 12 starts.

The biggest question is not Lodolo’s talent. It is how sharp he will be after nearly a month away from Major League competition.

His finger blister forced another interruption to a season in which Cincinnati has struggled to maintain rotation stability. Tuesday represents an important step toward getting the left-hander back into a normal routine.

Against Chicago, first-pitch strikes will be critical. Lodolo cannot afford to repeatedly work from behind against Vargas, Montgomery, Murakami and the rest of a lineup with 152 team home runs through 117 games.

If his command is immediately sharp, Cincinnati’s chances increase considerably. If Chicago forces long counts, his first start back could become a short one.

Sean Burke

RHP, Chicago White Sox

Burke has quietly put together an impressive season.

The right-hander enters at 7-6 with a 3.08 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 144 strikeouts in 128⅔ innings. Opponents are batting just .222 against him.

His recent stretch has been even stronger.

Burke owns a 1.50 ERA across his last five starts while averaging six innings per outing. During that stretch he has generated 38 strikeouts, including back-to-back 10-strikeout performances against the Yankees and Astros.

Burke must be careful with Cincinnati’s power hitters. Stewart has 25 home runs, while De La Cruz has 20 and JJ Bleday has 20.

The key will be avoiding unnecessary walks ahead of those hitters. If Burke controls the strike zone, his swing-and-miss arsenal gives Chicago a substantial pitching advantage.

Keys to the Game

Cincinnati Must Make Burke Work

The Reds cannot allow Burke to dominate the strike zone and cruise through six or seven innings.

Cincinnati needs patient plate appearances, foul balls and deep counts. Burke’s recent strikeout production demonstrates what happens when opponents allow him to consistently reach two-strike counts.

Getting his pitch count elevated before the sixth inning would give Cincinnati an opportunity to attack Chicago’s bullpen rather than spending most of the night against the White Sox starter.

Lodolo Must Establish His Command Immediately

There may be some rust after a month between Major League starts.

Lodolo cannot afford to spend the opening innings searching for his release point. Chicago has enough power to turn early walks into crooked numbers.

Getting ahead of Vargas, Montgomery and Murakami will allow Lodolo to expand the strike zone instead of being forced to throw hittable pitches in fastball counts.

Elly De La Cruz Must Create Pressure

De La Cruz gives Cincinnati its best opportunity to change the game without relying exclusively on home runs.

His combination of a .353 on-base percentage and 21 stolen bases allows him to immediately create problems whenever he reaches base.

Cincinnati needs him reaching base ahead of Stewart and the middle of the lineup. If Burke keeps De La Cruz off the bases, the Reds become considerably easier to manage.

Chicago Must Take Advantage of Lodolo’s Return

The White Sox should force Lodolo to prove that his command and endurance have returned.

Rather than chasing breaking pitches early, Chicago can make him work deep into counts and force Cincinnati to make an early bullpen decision.

Lodolo has quality swing-and-miss stuff when healthy and locked in. Chicago’s best opportunity may come before he settles into the game.

The Verdict

Prediction: Chicago White Sox 5, Cincinnati Reds 3

Moneyline Pick: Chicago White Sox -148

Run-Line Lean: Chicago White Sox -1.5 (+146)

Best Total Bet: Under 8.5 Runs

Best Prop Target: Sean Burke Over 5.5 Strikeouts

Chicago enters Tuesday with the more reliable starting pitcher, the stronger home record and less uncertainty surrounding its pitching plan. The market reflects those advantages by making the White Sox approximately a -150 favorite.

Burke’s recent form is the deciding factor. A 1.50 ERA and 38 strikeouts across his last five starts demonstrate that he is capable of controlling this matchup if he continues locating his pitches.

Cincinnati certainly has enough power to make him pay for mistakes. De La Cruz and Stewart can change the game with one swing, while De La Cruz’s speed creates additional pressure whenever he reaches base.

The larger concern for Cincinnati is Lodolo. He could immediately return to form, but his first Major League appearance since July 11 creates enough uncertainty to favor Chicago’s offense and bullpen structure.

Expect Burke to generate six or more strikeouts and give Chicago approximately six quality innings. Lodolo keeps Cincinnati competitive but exits before the seventh, allowing the White Sox to build a modest lead.

Chicago wins 5-3, covering the -1.5 run line while the game finishes just below the 8.5-run total.

Final Pick: Chicago White Sox -148Best Value Bet: Under 8.5 RunsTop Prop Target: Sean Burke Over 5.5 Strikeouts
