On Wednesday, New York Mets’ Jacob deGrom pitched for the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse in his last minor basketball game. After that game, manager Buck Showalter told sources that he would include the right-handed pitcher on the Mets’ roster for rotation against the Washington Nationals next week on August 2. It will be a probable major league debut for deGrom in this 2022 MLB season after a long injury. Check out the top sportsbooks for betting on baseball.
For the record, deGrom has had his hamstring injured since the 2021 season. The 34-year-old was predicted to pitch for the Mets in the 2022 season opener, but he injured his shoulder and missed the entire 2022 season. If the debut happens, the Mets’ next matchup against Nationals will be his first major league game for more than a year. However, Showalter said he would wait to see his player’s arm conditions.
In the game against Syracuse, deGrom played as a starter and threw 67 pitches, allowing four runs on two hits, three walks, and six strikeouts against the Omaha Storm Chasers. The two-time Cy Young winner’s poor performance concluded with the early allowance of two homers from Omaha batter, leading to a 4-0 disadvantage for Syracuse.
After the game, Mets fans said were not impressed by the denominator’s last minor appearance with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate team. According to sources, Mets fans were doubtful that deGrom’s debut next week would be a great one, and some said that he needed more time before making his return to MLB.
“Currently melting down emotionally about Jacob deGrom. Officially switching to we will not see him this season, and possibly ever again. Any time I ever see Jake in the major leagues will just be a bonus,” KFC Radio’s Kevin Clancy tweeted on his Twitter account @kfcbarstool
Other Twitter accounts, namely @general_6reen and @cheeenno, reacted to the tweet by saying “Yikes” and “Washed” to deGrom’s performance.
DeGrom was selected as the 272nd pick in the ninth round by the Mets at the 2010 Major League Baseball draft. That being said, his first debut occurred on May 12, when the Mets promoted him to the major leagues as Gonzalez Germen’s replacement.
Statistically, before his injuries, 2019 to 2021 was the best period for deGrom, and he had been one of the best pitchers in baseball by starting 59 times and recording a 2.08 ERA (198 ERA+). In that period, he also had himself a big pitching number with a 6.92 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 364 innings. Also, he was voted to play at All-Star games four times by the fans and was awarded the NL Rookie of the Year title back in 2014.
According to sources, it is still uncertain if deGrom will opt out of his contract with the Mets this winter due to his year of major inactivity despite the fact that he previously said he wanted to extend his contract of one year and $32.5 million remaining to play more years with the Mets..
