The Cleveland Guardians survived three consecutive elimination games. Now they face a Tampa Bay Rays team that took a much shorter route to the American League Championship Series.
Cleveland advanced with Saturday’s 2–0 victory over Chicago, completing its comeback from a 2–0 series deficit. Tampa Bay swept the Yankees in three games and enters this best-of-seven matchup with home-field advantage.
For bettors, the opening game presents a clear question: can Cleveland carry its recent success into another difficult pitching matchup, or will Tampa Bay’s starting-pitching advantage decide the opener?
My lean is toward the Rays taking Game 1, with the moneyline offering a more straightforward approach than asking Tampa Bay to win by multiple runs.

Cleveland’s comeback against Chicago gives the Guardians confidence, but this opening matchup requires a fresh evaluation.
Griffin provides a legitimate starting option. He finished the regular season 15–6 with a 3.60 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 158 strikeouts across 172⅔ innings. Those numbers support his ability to keep Cleveland competitive, although they do not suggest the same level of baserunner suppression as Rasmussen’s.
The Guardians’ best offensive approach is patience without passivity. They need to identify pitches they can handle, resist expanding the strike zone and avoid giving Rasmussen quick innings.
José Ramírez remains central to that plan. His two-run homer supplied the scoring in Saturday’s clincher, demonstrating how one productive swing can decide a game even when the lineup is not generating constant traffic.
The concern is that Cleveland falls behind early and begins pressing. Against a pitcher who limits walks, trying to manufacture an immediate response can lead to poor swings and shorter at-bats.
At +147, the Guardians offer an attractive return if Griffin keeps the game close. I still give Tampa Bay the edge, but Cleveland’s ability to win a tight contest makes the underdog worth considering.
The strongest reason to back Tampa Bay is Rasmussen.
He finished the regular season 16–5 with a 2.67 ERA and 0.91 WHIP across 172 innings. He struck out 174 batters while walking 32, giving the Rays a starter capable of limiting both contact damage and free baserunners.
That creates a demanding assignment for Cleveland. The Guardians may need several productive at-bats in the same inning rather than expecting Rasmussen to create a scoring opportunity through walks.
Tampa Bay also enters with an encouraging offensive foundation. The Rays scored 736 regular-season runs compared with Cleveland’s 678, and their team batting average was .258 against the Guardians’ .239.
Those season totals do not decide tonight’s result, but they support Tampa Bay’s status as the favorite.
Against Griffin, the Rays should focus on creating traffic before asking their power hitters to deliver. A single, a walk and a well-placed ball can be enough to change a game with a low total.
My preference is the moneyline. Cleveland has already shown it can survive close games, making Tampa Bay’s -1.5 run line a more demanding selection.
These are betting leans. Confirm starting lineups, available markets and prices before selecting a prop.
Rasmussen is my preferred pitching-prop target.
Six strikeouts cashes the displayed over-5.5 market, which was listed at -117 when checked. His combination of control and strikeout ability gives the selection a reasonable foundation, but innings remain important. An early pitching change would reduce his opportunities.
Ramírez is my preferred Cleveland hitter to consider.
A single-hit selection keeps the requirement manageable against a difficult starter. His switch-hitting ability also helps when Tampa Bay changes pitchers later in the game.
The concern is price. A strong player can still be a poor-value selection when the market requires too much investment for a modest return.
Caminero offers a straightforward way to back a Tampa Bay hitter without requiring a home run or multiple total bases.
Against Griffin, I prefer the single-hit market to a more aggressive power selection. It allows an ordinary single to cash and leaves opportunities against Cleveland’s relievers later.
Confirm his starting spot and compare the available price.
Díaz is another Tampa Bay option worth considering if the price is reasonable.
For this matchup, keeping the target to one hit avoids needing an extra-base result. Batting-order position matters because an additional plate appearance can make a meaningful difference.
Check the confirmed lineup before making the selection.
Cleveland must make Rasmussen work. Chasing pitches and producing quick outs would allow him to control the game.
Tampa Bay must capitalize on early traffic. Leaving runners aboard could give Cleveland time to settle into the contest.
Both teams must protect outs. With the total set at 6.5, a defensive mistake or unnecessary walk could have an outsized effect.
My pick is Rays moneyline at -153.
Rasmussen gives Tampa Bay the stronger starting-pitching foundation, and I expect the Rays to generate enough offense to take the opener. Cleveland’s recent success keeps this from being a confident run-line selection.
For the total, I lean under 6.5 at +111. The low threshold leaves little room for a big inning, so it remains secondary to the moneyline.
Final prediction: Tampa Bay wins 3–2 and takes a 1–0 lead in the ALCS.
