“I loved how he handled the game behind the plate and also came up big with the homer when we needed it to separate us a little bit and give us a little breathing room,” said A.J. Hinch, the Tigers’ manager, commending Haase’s performance.
That was Haase’s fifth home run of the season and the second in his last three games.
“Definitely looking slider,” Haase said, looking to be satisfied regarding his own play. “Fortunately for me, I got one in the zone and just something I could handle.”
Miguel Cabrera also managed to drive in a run for the Tigers. This helped not only split the two-game series but also improve the team’s worst record in the league to 11-23.
Meanwhile, Rony Garcia (3-2) won his third start for Detroit, consecutively. This allowed him one run on four hits with four strikeouts in five innings. Gregory Soto had 17 opportunities and was able to pitch a perfect ninth for the 15th save.
“It was wonderful,” he said, as translated by his interpreter. “It was very, very good. I tried to do the job and fortunately, we were able to win the game today.”
On the other hand, right-hand pitcher Michael Pineda, who suffered a fractured right middle finger is expected to come off the injured list. The team definitely expects that he would be playing against the Kansas City Royals on Friday, though Hinch has not confirmed anything about it until that day.
“We’re not gonna make anything official until likely Friday morning,” he said. “He’s penciled in. That’s about as far as we need to make it.”
On the side of the Giants, Evan Longoria managed to score a first-inning home run, although the team wasn’t able to use it as an advantage on late-inning chances to score a tie.
Down 3-1 in the seventh, the Giants managed to load the bases with one out. Mike Yastrzemski was grounded into a fielder’s choice, which allowed Tommy La Stella to score and cut the deficit to one. After a walk to which Longoria loaded the bases again, Austin Slater succeeded in striking out three pitches.
La Stella doubled to left with two outs in the eighth. However, Wilmer Flores grounded out to third in order to end the inning. The Giants left nine runners on the base overall.
The Giants starter Alex Wood (5-7) fanned six in 5 2/3 innings but decided to surrender three runs on seven hits in order to take the loss. He found the game of that day was an exceptionally difficult one, although he had tried his best. In the end, the two home runs from the Tigers’ marked the defeat for the Giants.
“These are the days that are just extremely frustrating,” he said. “I felt really good. I thought it was the best my slider’s been in a long time, if not (all) year. So to have that (home run) happen at the end really sucked, to be honest. Just really frustrating.”
