Brewers trade Josh Hader to Padres as MLB trade deadline approaches

Publish Date: 08/02/2022
Fact checked by: Mike Goodpaster

The great reliever Josh Hader is being traded by the Milwaukee Brewers to the San Diego Padres, ESPN’s Jeff Passan tweeted on Tuesday. In return, Milwaukee will receive the left-handed Taylor Rogers, the right-handed Dinelson Lamet, the outfielder Esteury Ruiz, and the left-handed Robert Gasser. Up until this point, the Brewers’ choice to trade Hader has been logical. The Brewers’ decision to make the move was solidified by several considerations, including the fact that Hader would be eligible for free agency after this season and the increasing expense of his arbitration.

Other elements that encourage the Brewers to finalize the deal include Hader’s fairly unappealing numbers in 37 outings, which include a 4.92 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a 4.24 ERA (97 ERA+), especially when compared to his regular productivity.

How this trade affects Brewers, Padres

However, the Brewers won’t be too concerned about Hader departing because they will receive another excellent reliever in return in the form of 31-year-old Rogers, who is predicted to be just as productive as Hader. In 41 innings this year, he has a 4,35 ERA (87 ERA+) and a 5,33 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which however makes this record unusually low when compared to his typical performance in previous seasons.

It’s interesting to note that Hader has been the Brewers’ regular closer since the ninth inning of 2018. With Hader leaving for the Padres, the Brewers will now have a new regular closer for the first time ever since. However, it is a breath of fresh air to know that Devin Williams, who has been routinely providing strong performances for the club, is still one of the Brewers’ pitchers.

Although the difference in pay between Hader and Rogers is only $2 million over the course of a full season, Hader is one of the highest-paid players in the Brewers lineup, second only to Cristian Yelich. As a result, his departure will at the very least relieve some of the pressure the Brewers were under while Hader was a member of the team.

What makes it more intriguing is that the Brewers will ultimately bolster their back-end lineup by acquiring Gasser, the ninth-best prospect in San Diego’s system, as part of this trade transaction. Lamet’s arrival is especially intriguing because he has a reputation for having strong pitching depth, and Ruiz will also improve the hitters’ lineup.

It’s also known that the Padres chose to acquire Hader in return for a few of their guys will be a good trade. It has been reported that Lamet lacks the chemistry to compete in the major leagues, Rogers has underperformed and will become a free agent in a few months, and the Padres still have more youthful talent than only Gasser and Ruiz.

It’s crucial for the Padres that MacKenzie Gore and all of their potential players, such as C.J. Abrams, Robert Hassell III, James Wood, and Jackson Merrill, remain. Some claim that by dealing Josh Hader, the Padres’ chances of acquiring Juan Soto will also remain high. It has already been reported before that Soto is wanted by the Padres to join the team this year, especially after Soto assisted the Nationals in winning the 2019 World Series.
