We asked

How does your experience in sports media relations help you cover the betting industry?
My background taught me to look beyond the surface and ask the right questions. When I was working with USA Football and managing relationships with outlets like the Associated Press and NFL Network, I learned how information flows in the sports world and where the real stories are hiding. In the betting industry, that same investigative approach helps me understand which sportsbooks are actually trustworthy versus which ones just have good marketing. I know how to verify claims, check sources, and spot red flags because that’s exactly what I did when crafting media strategies and crisis communications plans. The analytical skills I developed evaluating NFL prospects for Sports Illustrated translate directly to evaluating betting platforms and odds.
What makes your approach to sports betting content different from other writers?
I think my combination of media relations experience and hands-on sports analysis gives me a unique perspective. Most betting writers either come from a pure gambling background or they’re general sports fans who got into betting. I spent years breaking down player performance for NFL Draft analysis—writing over 800 prospect profiles and co-winning a major mock draft competition. That same attention to detail and ability to spot patterns helps me analyze betting trends and evaluate sportsbook performance. Plus, my media relations background means I understand how sports information gets packaged and presented, so I can help readers see through the marketing hype to find the real value.
What advice do you give people who are new to online sports betting?
Start by treating it like any other form of research and analysis. Just like I wouldn’t publish a prospect profile without watching film and checking multiple sources, you shouldn’t place bets without doing your homework. Learn to read odds properly, understand what different bet types actually mean, and always verify that a sportsbook is properly licensed before depositing money. Most importantly, set a budget and stick to it—treat betting money like entertainment expenses, not investment capital. The same discipline that helps me evaluate hundreds of NFL prospects each year applies to responsible betting.
