The Grueling Truth - Where Legends Speak / Derby di Milano: Our combined XI

Derby di Milano: Our combined XI

Derby di Milano!
Publish Date: 02/02/2021
Fact checked by: Mike Goodpaster

The second Derby di Milano of the season is just around the corner, and as we approach the latter half of the 2020/21 Serie A campaign, there is probably more at stake now than there has been for the last decade. For the first time in ten years, AC Milan is sitting pretty at the top of the table, but their bitter rivals Inter are hot on their heels. At the time of writing, just two points separate Stefano Pioli’s Milan at the top of the table from Antonio Conte’s Inter in second, so there it is definitely all to play for at the San Siro on February 21st, and there’s little between them in the bet exchange.

As matchday approaches, we have analyzed both of the Milan squads, and put together this combined XI. Read on to find out more.

Formation: 5-3-2

GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma – It’s hard to believe that Donnarumma is still just 21 years of age. He has been a regular feature in the AC Milan squad since 2015, when he was just 16, and has already made over 220 appearances for the Rossoneri.

RWB: Achraf Hakimi – Hakimi caught the eye of many European clubs whilst on loan at Borussia Dortmund between 2018-2020, but it was Inter Milan who ultimately snapped him up from Real Madrid. He has settled straight into the Serie A and has six goals and three assists in 19 games.

CB: Alessio Romagnoli – Like Donnarumma, Romagnoli has been a staple in the Milan side since he signed from Roma in 2015. Now the Rossoneris captain and one of the best defenders in the Serie A, it’s impossible to leave the 26-year-old out.

CB: Stefan de Vrij – Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij has been a key figure in the Inter squad since signing from Lazio in 2018. The 28-year-old, who has even scored a couple of times against Milan, has formed a formidable relationship with his centre-back partner Milan Škriniar.

CB: Milan Škriniar – That is why we have had to include Škriniar in our XI as well. The Slovakian’s solid performances for I Nerazzurri have attracted interest from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

LWB: Theo Hernandez – It’s fair to say that Theo Hernandez didn’t live up to his hype at Real Madrid. However, since signing for AC Milan he has come on leaps and bounds and is now considered to be one of the best left-backs in Europe. Four goals and three assists so far this season isn’t bad for a full-back either.

CM: Marcelo Brozović – Brozović is the classic Serie A midfielder. He is a great passer of the ball, but is also well-known for his hard tackling, fantastic interceptions and unlimited stamina. The Inter midfielder often thrives in the Derby di Milano and has scored a few goals in recent years too.

CM: Franck Kessié – AC Milan’s Kessié is another solid option in the centre of the park. The defensive midfielder is also a great passer, but he has the ability to score goals too, and his six strikes so far this season are evidence of that.

CM: Nicolò Barella – Barella is considered to be one of the best young midfielders in Europe. His versatility in the middle of the park gives Conte the option to deploy him either in an attacking or defensive role. He has good technique, solid strength, inch-perfect passing and the ability to score goals.

ST: Romelu Lukaku – Things might not have worked out for Lukaku at Manchester United, but it’s fair to say that he has got his career back on track in Milan. The Inter striker is a regular on the scoresheet and has bagged 35 goals in 54 Serie A appearances since his 2019 move.

ST: Zlatan Ibrahimović – The Swede may be the ripe age of 39, but when watching him play, you wouldn’t think he’s almost a decade past his prime. Ibrahimović, who has also played for Inter, joined Milan for a second time last year, and has been pivotal in attack for the Rossoneri. His 12 goals in nine games means he is the joint-third goal scorer in the league with Lukaku. However, Zlatan has played nine less games.
