Weston, an undrafted rookie from Northern Iowa, had to be carted off the field due to a serious knee injury. After the practice, Weston underwent imaging tests and waited for the result.
An inside source told cleveland.com that they were hoping Weston’s ACL was intact, as torn ACL might cost the receiver the entire season.
Before his injury, Weston had performed well, especially since he got more reps with other receivers on injury leaves. With Weston’s condition, the Browns are at risk of having their receiver options cut down again.
This year’s camp has been marred with several injuries. David Bell, Browns’ third round draft-pick, sustained a foot injury right at the beginning of the camp. The injury was reported to be a small stress fracture and would take several weeks to heal.
On the second day, Anthony Schwartz strained his knee. He is currently included in the day-to-day injury list but is expected to return for the season’s opening. Additionally, Javon Wims could not participate in the camp, citing an illness.
The Browns also face uncertainty in regards to Watson’s position on the team, although they only recently traded him.
The new quarterback was awaiting a verdict for allegations of sexual misconduct after 30 massage therapists had reported him to the authorities. His case is under investigation.
According to cleveland.com, the decision from NFL disciplinary office rSue L. Robinson might be revealed at the beginning of next week. There is also a possibility that the office will put Wason on suspension.
In the recent training camp, the Browns had started to bring Jacoby Brissett as a backup. If Watson was suspended, then Brissett would inevitably take over his position. Browns have picked Brissett over another potential quarterback, Case Keenum.
Despite the allegations, cleveland.com reported that Watson had received positive responses from fans attending the training camp. He was seen signing autographs and posing for photos.
Watson had also shown potential chemistry with new teammates Harrison Bryant, David Njoku, and Donovan Peoples-Jones. He worked with the receivers to show fans some completions.
For promising players, the Browns are pleased with Njoku’s development as a tight end. He is currently among the highest-paid tight ends in the major league, earning more than $13,68 million per year.
In an interview, Browns’ head coach Kevin Stefanski said, “I am really proud of him and the work that he has put in and watching his blocking develop over the course of time that I have been here. He has really bought in.”
Stefanski went on to say how much he valued Njoku’s performance.
“He is obviously big enough and strong enough to do a lot of those jobs. That is what I am probably the most proud of him for but also recognizing that there is a ton of room to grow,” he explained.
“I think that is the beauty of David and a lot of our players here is they have that growth mindset where they want to continually get better.”
