Preseason starts tonight against Kansas City!
Join Dexter Carter and Matt Andruscavage as they preview the Chiefs game, review training camp and discuss the zone-blocking scheme installed by Coach Kyle Shanahan.
Dexter also discusses how players and coaches prepare for preseason and what his mindset was when he was a rookie, veteran and coach.
Things to watch tonight:
1) Β The Offense – It will be good see if Brian Hoyer can continue his accuracy. Expect Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin to play just a couple of series and then defer to rookie Trent Taylor and Jeremy Kerley. Watch two guys on the bubble – DeAndre Smelter and Aaron Burbridge. Burbridge could be a gunner, but Smelter would be interesting, given his size, if he makes the team.
The Running Game will be key, especially in the first half. Carlos Hyde will be out there for a little while, but Matt Breida and Joe Williams each have something to prove. Being effective on the ground will allow the rest of the offense to function and show some things tonight.
2) Tight Ends – Vance McDonald likely gets a lot of work with George Kittle being out and it could be an attempt to raise his stock for a trade. Cole Hukutini will be involved in the second half.
3) Defensive pressure – There are so many guys that can bring pressure, but the ones to watch are Aaron Lynch, Tank Carradine, and Ronald Blair. The starters probably don’t get a lot of action tonight, but Carradine and Blair are on the bubble. Lynch will be a situational pass rusher this year and should get a lot of preseason action.
4) The Play of the Corners – I don’t expect Rashard Robinson and Dontae Johnson to play today. Johnson is going through the concussion protocol and Robinson went through a minor injury this week. If Robinson plays, it’ll be one series. There are several guys that need to prove they deserve to be on the roster. Ahkello Witherspoon and K’Wann Williams will make the team and should see a lot action, but Keith Reaser, Will Redmond, Adrian Colbert, Will Davis, Prince Charles Iworah, and Asa Jackson will be looking to show off their coverage skills, but also their ability on special teams.
5) Offensive line play – Brandon Fusco, Zane Beadles, Garry Gilliam – these three are key for success in 2017. It will be very important for the offensive line to play well so that the skill players have more chances to make plays.
6) CJ Bethard – The rookie quarterback from Iowa has been great in camp and looks like a vet rather than a rookie. He has been accurate and has a great chance to be the number two quarterback over Matt Barkley.
