By now fans everywhere have heard about Floyd Mayweather’s plan of possibly fighting in the UFC. I myself heard the rumors start prior to the first fight he had with Conor McGregor last August.
In all honesty, the thought of Mayweather in an octagon doesn’t interest me at all but as a journalist, it is something I know needs to be addressed. That being said, let me make it clear that I do believe we’ll see him in the UFC in the near future. Again, it’s just not of interest to me.
Most die-hard boxing and MMA fans feel the same way truthfully. We’re not being naive, we’re just being a realist. It’s a huge money maker without a doubt. Hell, anything Mayweather does is a success and when you throw in the likelihood of fans finally getting see him lose…Oh well, back up the Brinks truck because the masses are coming.
What I do find funny though is that he and a large portion of his legion of fans seem to think he will be successful. I’ll say the same thing I said when McGregor faced him in a boxing ring, Mayweather is simply a fish out of water here. That, however, doesn’t seem to matter to him as he has started training and is serious about the crossover as he recently said in an interview:
“I started training already…endurance as far as moving around…I look forward to fighting probably by the end of the year…right now it’s a 50/50…I’m very, very interested…I’m gonna be working with different guys in the Jiu-Jitsu world…I’ll be working with guys with the wrestling…before I get in the Octagon, I got to be well-rounded all around the board…fighting is nothing new for me.”

Look, the UFC needs Floyd. He can write his own check if he were to face McGregor in a cage. The UFC has suffered a huge drop in PPV buys and merchandising sells the past year due to the lack of big names and the names get no bigger than Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor in an octagon, plain and simple.
This contest would generate higher numbers than anything Mayweather has ever done in a boxing ring. McGregor himself has consistently generated over 1M buys in the UFC and when you add the people that just want to see Mayweather get beat then you’ve got yourself a recipe for a fortune.
So if you’re a die-hard like myself and have said “No way Floyd sells his 0”, well you my friend have underestimated the power of the almighty dollar. When Mayweather calls himself The Best Ever, TBE, he says he isn’t talking about in the ring but in the boxing business as a whole. Well, it’s hard to argue against the man they call ‘Money’ on that.
