After defeating the Black Beast, Daniel Cormier has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. But Broc Lesner is ‘coming’ and wants to put a scar on DC’s reputation. Prior to a few days ago it was still only a ‘what if’ fight, but Dana White has now stated that the champ should face Lesner in his next title defense.
DC isn’t a huge favorite with the initial odds. In fact, Brock Lesner is only listed as a +188 underdog at most shops. If you have any questions regarding UFC betting, you can refer to this concise sports betting guide.
Love them or hate them, both of these fighters are compelling in their own ways. Daniel Cormier is known for being a stand-up guy (not in the striking sense, but in terms of character) and not backing out of fights (like so many are prone to in the UFC nowadays). Lesner is a physical phenomenon that is surprisingly intelligent for a guy who looks like a meat-heat villain out of a Conan the Barbarian tale.
Brendan Schaub recently stated that he feels Broc Lesner will be a much bigger challenge for Daniel Cormier than Derrick Lewis. That said, this fight won’t happen ‘tomorrow’. DC just fought, And the cards are filled through UFC 232. Plus, Broc Lesner is still serving his USADA suspension, so January would be the absolute earliest that this fight could take place. And Lesner just signed a new WWE deal that could put a hold on this fight and lead to Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones 3
Speaking of UFC 232, Jon Bone Jones still wants a piece of Broc. I know we shouldn’t say this (this is a joke) but since they both have a history of PEDs & USADA suspensions, couldn’t we just let Broc and Jon hop into a ring with no testing whatsoever and see how the cookie crumbles?
OK, we digress.
Daniel Cormier just marked Derrick Lewis. He landed 78% of his strikes and then submitted Lewis on his first attempt. DC is one of the most well-rounded fighters to ever grace the Octagon with his presence. The only fighter who has beaten him is Jon Jones, who may be the most talented athlete the UFC has ever seen. Cormier, in turn, is the only guy who has ever really challenged Jonny Bones.
Broc Lesner is a beast. There are not many words other to describe how physically imposing he is. He is also a natural athlete. Many people don’t realize that not only was he an NCAA wrestler, but he was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings as a defensive end before getting cut and signing with the WWF (now WWE). His size and strength advantage is clear. But can he hang with a talent like DC after two years away from the Octagon? That is the question.
Lesner is an animal so, he can’t be underestimated and it is also why the odds are not completely lopsided in favor of DC. That said, in all honesty, if DC can keep away from getting crushed by Lesner’s weight and strength, his technique and the fact that he isn’t laden with ‘ring rust’ should help him win the day.
